Manchester United fans gave a mixed response to a new 'singing section' after today's match at Old Trafford.

The section was trialled successfully at a Champions League game against Real Sociedad earlier this season and was brought back on a larger scale for the Premier League tie with Fulham.

Just over 2,600 fans who put themselves forward for the singing section were given seats in the corner of the stadium that used to be referred to as J and K Stands, opposite the players' tunnel.

The move was in response to calls from supporters, including a group called Fans United, to help improve the atmosphere on match days.

In a letter handed out to fans before the match, coach Phil Neville wrote: "If the singing area can become permanent, that can act as a catalyst for other areas of the stadium.

Neville calls for permanent singing section

"The club are doing the utmost to help give fans what they want. It comes from the fans but the club are listening."

Manager David Moyes added in the match programme: "I am looking forward to return of singing section which made for outstanding atmosphere when trialled v Real Sociedad"

Despite the disappointment of a 2-2 result, today's trial of the new section was hailed a success by fans group Stretford End Flags who wrote on Twitter: "Great atmosphere from the singing section. Raised their levels 2nd half and was mental when the #mufc goals went in."

"Hopefully the club viewed the trial a success and we can now put it in place full time next season."

One fan wrote: "Gutted about the result today, singing section never disappointed today though was pure class"

Another fan wrote: "Singing section could've been a lot louder but overall a lot better atmosphere than vs fulham previously at home."

Andy Simm - Simmy, @ASimmy83My, “...Despite the result i think it was another good effort”

Steve buckley @kstandsteve said: “Disagree with most I thought singing section was a huge success! How quiet that game would have been!”

But some supporters were not convinced the singing section was a success.

Labour councillor John Warmisham wrote on Twitter: "Singing section fragmented, different songs sang at bottom from top. Also many day tripper fans didn't know songs. Doesn't work."

United fan Mark Cookson also wrote: "Didn't think much of the singing section today."

And another supporter wrote: "Was it me or did the rest of the ground suffer with the new singing section trial today?"

CleggTheRed @CleggTheRed added: “Singing section failed today! 1-0 down it was silent, twice as many people as the first time and not as loud”

That rug really tied the room together.

That letter is an obvious fake, albeit a funny one. I think the bit about Tufty appointing Moyes is a bit of a giveaway , not to mention Strepsils being their official singing partner

                              Cleverley: I'm the scapegoat
Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley feels he has been made a scapegoat for the club's poor form.

Tom Cleverley: Feels his job goes under the radar
The champions have made hard work of their Premier League title defence and may even struggle to land a Champions League place next season as they currently sit nine points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool.

Criticism of David Moyes and his side has been widespread, but fans have aimed much of their frustration at Cleverley.

"When I first started getting singled out, it stung," the midfielder told the Mirror. "But it's something you have got to learn to take when the team is not doing well.

"My job goes under the radar at times. I am not a player who's going to beat three or four people and stick it in the top corner or go round tackling people like Roy Keane.

"I would like the fans on my side and it hurts a little bit when you have grown up at the club and love the club every bit as much as the supporters.

"But there are other people in the current United squad who have been through this kind of thing and they have made sure their quality shone through.

"I have got to look at those people. I have learned to take it with a pinch of salt and I'm sure it will make me stronger for the rest of my career.

"I feel I've been made a scapegoat a little bit. A few people in the media certainly seem to have a perception of me not doing much in the team.

"Don't get me wrong, I know I can do better but people are making a big thing about how I don't score enough goals when that is not necessarily my first job in the team."

United fans might want to see Cleverley in a box-to-box role, but that is not the role Moyes has asked him to play with the United boss preferring him in a holding role.

"I watch Spanish football a lot," Cleverley says. "If they pass the ball sideways but keep possession, the fans clap them.

"Their attitude is that as long as you have got the ball, the other team can't hurt you.

"I know the mentality is different here and that is what makes our game the best in the world because it is so intense.

"But sometimes I have got to not listen and play my game because I feel I'm doing the best thing for the team."
