A former Manchester City star sent the internet into overdrive after announcing the sacking of Manchester United’s manager - before claiming he had fallen victim to a Christmas party prank.
A message from Trevor Sinclair's account sent Twitter into meltdown earlier after tweeting that Reds boss Louis Van Gaal had lost his job .
The Dutchman is under severe pressure at Old Trafford after a run of six games without a win, culminating in the club's 2-1 loss at home to Norwich on Saturday.
Speculation is rife he may be dismissed and replaced by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho .
And a message from 42-year-old Sinclair's official account said: “LVG is to be sacked...... Think Ed Woodward is a City fan” accompanied by an old photograph of United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward with the Portuguese coach.
He then added: “Old photo but LVG has gone."
Another message added: “Jose is in at the swamp” - a term often used by City fans to refer to Old Trafford.
His tweets were re-tweeted and quoted thousands of times in a matter of minutes and added fuel to the already growing rumours that Van Gaal’s short tenure at the Theatre of Dreams could shortly be over .
However he then sent a message saying the tweets had been posted by a prankster, saying: “School boy error.
“Left my phone on the table at a Christmas party. Sincere apologies for my last 2 tweets #Merrychristmas.”
He was sacked earlier this evening but he hasn't left the building yet. He keeps passing through the doors either sideways or backwards
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
Press conf lasted 4mins 58secs. Important line pre-walkout: Van Gaal said he had received assurances from Woodward, Ferguson and Gill #mufc

My UTD friends who once called Mourinho all sorts of names and said they'd rather never win a trophy with UTD again if it meant playing attractive football compared to his slug fest now suddenly look forward to getting him. They want trophies so badly. To be fair if they do get him it wont be a good thing for us. Next season we'd be able to surprass them. But probably not with Mourinho in. He'll have plenty of money to bring in players he wants and he always does very well in his first couple seasons at a new club.
