The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Australian newspapers have broken the story of how Manchester United almost walked out on playing the A-League All Stars due to a Pepsi versus Coke dispute.

According to Australia’s Daily Telegraph, just an hour before kick-off in Sydney, the game was in danger of being abandoned over a sponsorship row involving soft drink giants Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

According to reports, the last minute fight broke out when Manchester United, now sponsored by Pepsi in the Asia-Pacific region, realised that the ANZ Stadium, sponsored by Coke, would be showing adverts for the rivals soft drink during the exhibition.

ANZ Stadium officials claim that the Red Devils threatened to boycott the match:

Man U’s commercial department threatened that the team would not run out if the Cola-Cola sign stayed on the big screen. It wasn’t discovered until the team arrived at the ground.

The matter was only solved 20 minutes before kick off when ANZ Stadium officials agreed to swap the Coke signs for Mount Franklin water, another drink in Coca-Cola’s brand.

Man United have been criticised by the Football Federation Australia for their behaviour in the dispute.

There was a fairly heated discussion which involved FFA as well. The odd part is that there were lots of Man U people at the stadium three nights earlier for State of Origin and nothing was said about the signs. They could hardly say they were caught by surprise.

Manchester United won the match 5-1, the first victory of David Moyes’ reign.

Wayne Rooney to submit Manchester United transfer request THIS WEEK as he seeks new challenge
              3 Aug 2013 23:30
Team-mates believe the 27-year-old will make his wishes known in the coming days - but the club hopes they can sell him abroad

Wayne Rooney will ask Manchester United for a transfer this week.

Sunday Mirror Sport understands that talk of Rooney’s future has *dominated the Old Trafford dressing room during pre-season and that many of his United team-mates are expecting the 27-year-old striker to now make his wish to leave the club *official in the coming days.

New United boss David Moyes has insisted since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson last month that Rooney is not for sale – and has rejected bids from Chelsea and Arsenal. But Rooney – and his team-mates – *believe that his time at *United has come to an end nine years after arriving from Everton in a *£25million deal.

Rooney feels his future would be best served under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, but United will *ideally look to sell him abroad.

Submitting an official transfer request will prompt the Blues to increase their offer to £30m. A dressing-room source said: “It is now clear that Wayne has made up his mind about leaving United.

“It has nothing to do with David Moyes. He simply feels that he needs a new challenge.

“The talk around the club has been that he will *officially ask for a transfer in the next week.”

Manchester United will set their sights on Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger – if a third bid for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas fails this week.

The Premier League *champions have become aware of whispers in Germany that Schweinsteiger may not fit into Pep Guardiola’s new Bavarian blueprint.

And with United *looking for top-class midfield alternatives should a final *attempt to prise Fabregas away from the Nou Camp be unsuccessful, the 29-year-old German would fit the bill perfectly.

United’s need for reinforcements is starting to become so desperate that they are preparing one final *club-record bid for Fabregas worth *£35million plus £5m in *add-ons .

It is an offer that is powered by the belief that the 26-year-old wants to move to Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger - they have lesser chance of getting him than Fabregas.

They think because they won the league that they can sign any player in the world regardless of whether he is for sale

                      FOOTBALL - TRANSFERS LATEST
Manchester United reject a second Chelsea offer for striker Wayne Rooney.

The bid, which was made late on Sunday, is understood to be around £25m plus add ons but United maintain the player is not for sale.

Rooney remains intent on leaving Old Trafford this summer and is considering submitting a formal transfer request, which could come later this week. The England striker will, however, train with United on Monday and will then travel with the squad to Sweden for a pre-season friendly match against AIK in Stockholm on Tuesday.
