He was the best CB for a period of time but the injuries just broke him down. Mancs and Ferguson are infamous for their rushing back of players and it has badly affected his later career.

Phil Neville and Chris Woods have been told they have no future at Manchester United by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

It is believed Woodward has offered former United coach Rene Meulensteen a return to the Old Trafford set-up under the expected arrival of soon-to-be Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Dismissal of Neville has caused anger amongst United personnel

Phil Neville and Chris Woods are the first victims of the impending Louis van Gaal shake-up having been told by Manchester United they have no future at the club.

Neville and Woods joined United as part of David Moyes's backroom staff at the start of last season, but were told on the final day of the season at Southampton that their services were no longer required.

It is understood that vice-chairman Ed Woodward delivered the news on the same afternoon that Rio Ferdinand was informed he would not be offered a new deal.

Ferdinand's departure brings to an end a 12-year stay at Old Trafford after making 454 appearances and scoring eight goals.

Dutchman Van Gaal is expected to be appointed as United manager later this week and is likely to clarify Ryan Giggs's future at the club.

Giggs took over the United helm on an interim basis for the final four matches of the season following the sacking of David Moyes and is expected to stay at Old Trafford.

It is, however, unclear whether he will prolong his playing career or if he will hang up his boots and just be part of Van Gaal's backroom staff.

Nicky Butt, who assisted Giggs in his interim role at the backend of the season, will return to his old role with the under-18s.

Paul Scholes, another member of the 'Class of 92', who had been assisting Butt on an ad hoc basis, is also expected to continue his casual coaching role at the club.
            Thanks very much for being

So as it stands United's defence consists of Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones and Keane with Evra and Buttner likely to both leave this summer too.

Rio Ferdinand has today released the following statement:
"At 35 I still want to play at the top level, to compete for the English Premier League and to play in the UEFA Champions League, and on this basis it is with huge regret that I have today decided to leave Manchester United in order to seek a new club which can match those ambitions"

I think that United should appoint Pulis.
                            Oh I don't know.
