Roy Keane has launched a withering attack on Manchester United, saying that the club's vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, "needs to look at himself" over the failure to secure quality signings last summer and that players such as Phil Jones must toughen up.
While the former United captain believes that Louis van Gaal would be a good appointment, he said that David Moyes deserved more time. Keane insisted that Moyes, who was sacked after 10 months in charge, should not be held accountable for the way that United missed out on a number of their main targets last summer and that Woodward has to get deals done if there is to be improvement next season.
"He [Moyes] had one transfer window, and it's not always down to the manager when players don't come in," said Keane, who was speaking at ITV's World Cup launch. "I think Ed Woodward needs to look at himself. He's got to get deals done. I think he should have been given more time. I was happy with David Moyes. I think Van Gaal is a good choice. Only time will tell. He's managed big clubs."
Keane believes that Jones and Chris Smalling have both gone backwards over the past year. "They've had a platform for the last couple of years," he said. "We were told two or three years ago Jones was going to be the new Duncan Edwards, Smalling was this … I've watched United live nine, 10 times this year and they have been none of those things. If anything I think they have gone backwards. I've actually been a big fan of them – yes, give them a chance, you say you have to give players a chance to mature but also you've got players who you say we've given you a chance and you're not taking it.
"They need to do a lot better if they want to cement their place at Man United and United to win trophies. Jones needs to toughen up. Every time I see him he is getting carried off. He's got to toughen up – he's playing for Man United. They have to recruit in the summer – they might get two.
"It's the spine of the team. United have come up short defensively and in the middle of the park they have not done enough. You watch any of the teams that are winning trophies, Jesus I'm stating the obvious, you've got to have a strong spine, goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker and United have been short in two of those areas. It makes it very difficult to win trophies."
Keane was not surprised that Rio Ferdinand will leave United this summer or bothered that the defender was not given a chance to say goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd.
"That might have suited him," he said. "Not everybody wants to wander around the pitch waving and crying. It's not about walking on the pitch – I don't know where you're going with this one. He didn't have a chance to say goodbye? You can say goodbye on Twitter, can't you?"
That rug really tied the room together.

Hull City boss Steve Bruce is interested in taking Rio Ferdinand to Hull City after the announcement that he would be leaving United this summer.
Asked about the former England skipper, Bruce said: "We’ve cast an eye on a few things. I haven’t looked into that yet, because the news only broke last night. Rio has been a wonderful player. Who knows? If he fancies a game…
"We’ve got Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday, so let me get over the weekend first, then I’ll see if we’ll give him a call," said Bruce

Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in furious training ground bust-up after Liverpool loss- Nemanja Vidic accused Patrice Evra of neglecting his duties in the defeat
- The Manchester United pair had to be restrained by ex-boss David Moyes
- Vidic was sent off in the 3-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford in March
- Vidic is joining Inter Milan after eight seasons at Manchester United
Nemanja Vidic had to be separated from team-mate Patrice Evra by former boss David Moyes as Manchester United's season descended into bickering and acrimony.
The furious bust-up came as United's players pored over replays of a 3-0 defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford in March.
Vidic, who was sent off after receiving two yellow cards from referee Mark Clattenburg, accused Evra of neglecting his defensive duties by leaving him exposed.
The Frenchman is said to have exploded with anger and had to be restrained by Moyes and other members of staff as the incident threatened to boil over at United's Carrington training base.
Vidic, who is leaving United after more than eight years to join Inter Milan, has confirmed that the players fell out as their season lurched from one disappointment to another.
'We argued amongst ourselves,' admitted the United captain in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
'This year more than any other, because when you have bad times, people show they care. We are still friends, but we were arguing to get better. We wanted to improve.
'We could say those things to each other because we have been together for so long, but it hurt. If you didn't argue, it would not be right. We had some hard moments in the dressing room between ourselves.'
Vidic and Evra, who joined United together in January 2006 from Spartak Moscow and Monaco respectively, have since settled their differences.
Evra could even join the Serb at Inter if he too decides to leave Old Trafford now his contract has expired, although a return to France with Paris Saint-Germain would appear more likely.
The two players have won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and three League Cups together at United, and Evra paid tribute to the man he calls 'The Rock' last week as Vidic prepared to make his final home appearance.
'I'm really sad because when I speak about Nemanja it's like I'm speaking about myself because we joined the club together,' said Evra.
'Our first game was for the reserves and it was so hard. Rene (Meulensteen) was the manager and he took us both out of the match.
'We were talking together in the dressing-room and saying, "Oh my god, why have we come to Manchester United? We should go back to our clubs quickly!"
'It was a difficult moment but we stuck together. We were in the same hotel, we went into training together, we won the same trophies. I’m really sad to lose The Rock.’
