I'm having fun with a number of Manchester United supporting colleagues this morning.

So far, their only retort has been our purchase of Andy Carroll. They're struggling for sticks.

With the money they have spent in the last 18 months you'd think poor purchases is the last thing they would want to highlight

i think roy keane was right last night when he said that they should have given Moyes more time.

In reality they were shocking last season but looking at the facts:

        1. It was always going to be most difficult in the first post-ferguson year.
        2. Moyes didn't get to spend all the cash that LVG has been given. He was given money for Fellaini, not DiMaria, Falcoa, Shaw, Rojo, Blind. I think if Moyes had been given those kind of resources then he would likely have bought players like Coleman and Barkley and possibly a top midfielder from europe. He wouldnt have bought loads of players and ended up with Rooney in midfield anyway, thats for sure.
        3. Moyes had to play in the champions league last season as well. Something that was new for him. As Brendan Rodgers has found this season, it is a totally different ball game preparing a team 48 hours or so after a european game. United's board should have given him time to adjust to that.
        4. I think RVP pulled up the handbrake when it was clear United were going to do fock all last season. He wanted to make sure he was tip-top for the world cup. He should have been bombed out of united for that.....

The fact that United board would surely have been seeking advice from Slur Alex makes the whole thing worse. He stabbed Moyes in the back.....and when you consider how difficult it was for Fergie to settle at united, then that makes it worse...

All in all though, it's great for Liverpool fans (or non-United fans to be honest). I think they will give LVG another year at least. I wouldn't be surprised if they throw another £150m at the squad again in the summer (especially with their new adidas deal kicking in) but it doesn't matter because they won't be able to attract the creme of european football any longer - it will be the likes of Ibrahimovic looking for a last payday or players with no other top options. Even if they do get CL football next season, then they will have the 2 games a week scenario and it will be a hard season for them next year....

Fast forward a year or two, and LVG will fock off and they will probably have Giggs in charge. Which will be funny.

The best thing they could do is do what LFC did - appoint a young potentially top class manager and give him 3 seasons, judge him on how the team are playing and become the team that attract the top young players in europe.

If they are not careful, then they could become like the Inter Milan of the early 90's - throwing ****loads of money at it every summer, a new manager every year or so and zero progress...... would be feckin hilarious...

Unbelievable this morning. I've said before I know a few Mancs quite well - home and away lads they are, proper hardcore. But really good lads too. I've never known them dread coming to our place as much as they are this month. They think it will be "toxic" - mostly from their own end, aimed at their own manager. Especially if they lose to Spurs next up.

Think I read recently he no longer goes to the game as the soaring cost has priced him out

There was no direction under Moyes

No clear tactics, dressing room was toxic, he wasnt a big name etc......

Van Gaal is a big name, the dressing room is less toxic with many of the trouble makers moved into the background or moved on

Just a pity his tactics are ****e

I think it is slightly unfair on Moyes to say there was no direction. We have seen this season under Van Gaal how limited the squad was and Moyes got much less money to improve it. With Fletcher and Carrick injured too often, van Persie and Rooney on the wane and the loss of Vidic, Evra, Ferdinand, Scholes and Giggs since Fergusson left the team had been gutted.

Van Gaal is a really good manager and given time will at least put things in place for future success. he's a good choice if you want to have a long term legacy in terms of good coaching and a solid youth system etc.

He's also been a successful top level coach. Most of his biggest achievements are a while in the past but I think if he gets time to mold a team/squad he will be seen as a success. He was always a better appointment than Moyes, but I do think that he was judged too quickly given the difficulty of the task he faced.

It's all set up for United to spawn a win. We've done well against them in recent years, we're at home, we're expected to win. Everything points to us winning mainly because they're ****e and we're actually quite good, but dunno, got a bad feeling
