Agree 100% with your comments about discussions around consent. I do think it’s getting better though, in the sense that issues are being raised nowadays that in the past woukd have been swept under the rug. Still a long long way to go though, and not something that will be fixed overnight, or even ever be 100% fixed.

I do think that possibly the only good thing that can happen here is that this incident is used to drive positive change in men’s attitude to women. This is beyond the pale.

I see that the police have asked for more time to interview Greenwood. I do wonder how it will end, normally we move past these stories as a society - but when the evidence against him is this bad, I’m not sure we can.

Young lads need educated. Everyone with a son needs to have the conversations. Thankfully schools are really good (up here anyway) with health and well being and they are thought a lot about Sex and sexuality in a matter of fact way. Consent is a massive conversation to be had.

I agree on the “Educate the boys” call to fix the problem, however as the father of 2 Scottish daughters, 19 & 17, I can’t agree the schools in the NE are ‘really good’ sadly, both girls have had more than one experience that had me wishing I had a baseball bat.

We all need to do better and if something good can come of it then I think the young lady in question should be lauded.

Her father on the other hand really needs to check himself. What kind of man knowingly let’s any child of theirs be abused in that way?!

My two are pretty young, and the (Primary) school have laid a good foundation but we parents have to follow it all up. And you are right, I do know, anecdotally that it would appear it is a slightly progressive set of teaching principals and not as common as we believed.

That’s grim for your girls and I am sure all women can tell similar tales that’s how widespread this behaviour is. There are issues with access to porn, conversations around this as well that we all need to have with our kids.

With the Dad, you have to hope he was blind sided/shocked as I agree his statement was bizarre.

I hope to God that sex ed and relationship stuff social education or whatever is better than when I was at school. PSE (Personal and Social Education?) was a doss period when I was at school, none of the teachers wanted to teach it or knew how to teach it you got the distinct impression that they didn't want to be there, I remember we were split into a group of girls and a group of boys and got a half hour talk where the teacher talked at the floor for much of the time, put a condom on a banana or cucumber or something and gave us a leaflet to read. Every other week it was just them babysitting us rather than teaching us anything.

If that's still how it's being taught when kids have easy access to all kinds of stuff on the internet sadly it's no wonder stuff like this happens. I really feel like PSE or whatever it's called is probably one of the most important and useful things that you can learn at school, 80% of stuff in other subjects will never be used again by most people but these are moral groundings where life skills and coping mechanisms should be taught.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

While the audio does not confirm that he carried out the action he was demanding/threatening it is absolutely damning as to his attitude to women. And there is definitely a solid argument for a control and coercive behaviour charge - especially with the images of injuries and her knowing what is coming her way if she does cede to his wishes.

He'll almost certainly never play for United again. His contract will be up before his case gets heard in crown court given the current backlog of cases.

I read more of it than I should and there was very little of it to be honest. The default setting seems to be 40 posts per page and there was probably 1 every 5 or so pages (over 90 pages in total) that required mod intervention. There just seemed to be a whole lot of pointless circular arguments about whether he would play again for them, whether the club should outright bin him off or sell him, whether he would be snapped up by another club if he was booted out without ceremony.

And for the best because there wasn’t really a progressive discussion.

Maybe they could set up a thread on ‘rape culture’ (maybe they have) and look to discuss what happened in a more productive way.

Broadly speaking he was condemned, they were gutted and outraged. I definitely think thoughts around consent is a very important discussion for men to have.

Think it is a bit like racism in that there is always something, every few years, that prompts a high profile call for education/talk.

The victims get called victims, but the abusers then get called victims for not being "told" or "educated" that rape is wrong.

People pat themselves on the back and then a few years later the cycle begins again.

Think when it comes to consent the only thing that matters is No means No.

You cannot handle that simple request then I don't give an eff what excuses are made for you, you simply have no place amongst other people. Go live out your life in a cell.

And yes I get that some will say that offenders deserve a change to show remorse and be rehabilitated and if that is anyone's opinon then fair enough, I can respect your opinion I just happen to disagree utterly with it.

Some lines are not to be crossed and if you cross them, then you deserve the exact same lack of compassion from society that you showed your victim.

That's only because they have not tried Barry's Master Blend and only had **** like Yorkshire or Liptons tea.

We are still talking about tea, right?
