    Sorry. I read this:

If it was a woman he was commenting on it would be OK
    for some reason.
    Oh I don't know.

There is a difference between a stereotype that gay men like quiche recipes, crochet and flower arranging and the stereotype that they lack self control and are rapists.

I've never seen a gay comedian joke that they sexually force themselves onto anyone

As a footballer, he's a role model to children and young people, especially considering today's generation of young people are not without reason called the digital natives and are connected on the internet, with their phones etc. Sports people are not comedians, sport requires a level of physical dedication that - considering the amount of fat, unhealthy kids - should serve as a role model to kids. So if this role model says something ****e like he does in a public arena that is accessible by the vast majority of the population, it sets a bad example and 'if he does it, I can do it' at school. Gays have already got it really hard, especially gays who are young and get bullied at school.

Anyways, it's pointless to debate it. Comedians are there to use language as a means to enlight the spirit and take the piss, sports people should use language as an inspiration. Imagine if Hyypia twittered something like that, would you say 'Oh it's just light-hearted fun'? I don't think so.

eh? what difference would it make if Hyypia has said it? I'd still have the same opinion that nobody should be sacked for saying that. As others have said, its a ridiculous thing for a grown man to say, but never in a million years will I ever agree that he should've been sacked for it. If Suarez had tweeted that would you all be saying he should be sacked? I don't think so...

And who said that footballers should be role models? Its not part of the contract, they're not Politicians paid for by our taxes. There's no intellectual exam to ensure that they're able to make sensible comments. They're paid to kick a ball about, nothing else.

Bit of a leap to infer that a childish 'wouldn't want the bed next to his' is based on the idea of gays being rapists.

The suggestion his arse needs to be padlocked implies the homosexual wouldnt bother asking.

You either haven't read or understood what you're responding to. As ChesterDave said, this is not just any old harmless stereotype. It's an incredibly damaging one born of ignorance.

What else do you think it's getting at? There are plausible alternatives, but there are many 'jokes' in this vain and they all stem from the idea that homosexuals are a perverse threat.

Exactly. It was clearly homophobic - implying that this gay man nearby will no doubt attempt to have sex with him because he is a man.

That said, it's not the kind of thing anyone in a workplace would be sacked for - you have a word with them and tell them not to be so bigoted/stupid. The fact he's 38 may be a factor here. That said, how long would he have had left anyway?!

If I'd noticed that bit I'd have agreed.

Be interesting to see if this chap would have the balls to say this to Gareth Thomas's face - I'd put money he wouldn't!

Either way a stupid, childish comment that's not needed in this day and age the punishment itself seems a tad harsh from his club but as others have said not a bad way of getting someone off the books if they're surplus to requirements!
