Wenger: Ban loans for players aged over 21

Arsene Wenger has called for a ban on Premier League clubs loaning each other players over the age of 21.

Wenger has seen his Arsenal side’s arch-rivals Tottenham benefit* from borrowing Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor to the tune of nine goals in 19 games, a return that has lifted them above the Gunners in the race for a top four finish.

Adebayor was ruled out of last Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at his parent club under the terms of the loan agreement.

But Wenger said: “Personally, I would not ban players on loan from playing against their own clubs.

“What I would like to see in the Premier League is that you are not allowed to loan players over the age of 21.”

The Frenchman, who has midfielder Yossi Benayoun, 31, on loan from Chelsea, added: “At the moment it is an opportunity for some clubs to reinforce other teams, without losing ownership of the player.

“For example, if a big club sends a big player to another club in the Premier League on loan, they only have benefits.

“That player cannot face his own club, yet he could win games against their rivals.

“Therefore, I think it would be better if players over 21 didn’t go on loan in the top league.”

Defending his decision to bring in Benayoun, he said: “It’s true that I haven’t done that often.

“But we were on the last day of the transfer window. We knew that Jack Wilshere would need surgery.

“So we were short in midfield at that point and to find two players so late was nearly impossible* for us without using a loan.

“At that time, the most important thing was just to sign him.”

I have to say I agree with him. Our loan system is ridiculous and I would actually go one step further in saying that a Premiership team should not be able to loan a player to another Premiership team, no matter how old he is.

I have too agree. Lower league I think its needed. But in the PL it should be to develop young talent.

      I agree with that.

On the Benayoun loan, my mate who is a regular at Arsenal told me that there is a pub right beside the Emirates that all the players drive past and the kids stand outside looking for autographs, most players wind the window down and sign for them and then other just wave. Apparently Benny went past and refused to sign anything or even be polite and when they booed him he gave everyone in the pub the middle finger, did his window down and yelled "**** off"

Perhaps he should have done a better job of keeping Adebayor in the first place, and been more organised last summer before leaving it to the last minute to sign 2 midfielders.

The Adebayor thing is pretty rare. I can't think of many other high profile loans between the top, top teams.
        Oh I don't know.

            Huh?

Anyway, I fully agree with wenger, but I'd go further and ban all loans between PL teams whatever the age.

He'd the first one to complain about someone playing against their own team, who happen to win the game etc etc

I was on about Loans for players over 21 Europe wide. It would stop Italian teams Loaning him all the time and force the club to sell or keep him.

Definitely should come in - with the exception of GKs.

arse wanger speaks some sense at last. it may just be because he prefers his new blood to be nice and young...

but it also add some value to the development of young talent. i agree with the idea of loaning players out to only the lower leagues, so there can be no conflicts with other premier league teams. you want them playing, not warming the bench
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

I would agree with baning loans of outfield players over 21 between Premiership clubs
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
