    Huddersfield Town

    Are they crackers?

They've lost 3 out of 55 league matches and Clark was sacked by phone call.

Huddersfield Town sack manager Lee Clark

Huddersfield Town have sacked manager Lee Clark and his coaching staff.

Clark, 39, had been in charge of the League One club since December 2008, losing last season's play-off final.

He leaves with the Terriers in fourth position in League One, four points off automatic promotion, following Tuesday's defeat by Sheffield United.

"We still have an opportunity to achieve promotion and we have made this change with this in mind," chairman Dean Hoyle told the club website.

"This was a very difficult decision; one not taken lightly or in response to one result. Concerns have been raised in recent weeks.

"Lee and his coaching staff have put their all into the job over the past three seasons and has made a huge contribution to the club."

BBC Sport understands that Clark was fired in a surprise two-minute phone call from Hoyle, who had not attended the loss to the Blades.

It is believed his case has been passed to the League Managers' Association and could lead to a claim for unfair dismissal.

Clark, whose playing career included spells at Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham, guided the club to last season's play-off final, where they were beaten 3-0 by Peterborough.

He presided over the longest unbeaten run in the club's history, which saw them go 43 regular season matches without defeat - a Football League record - before a 2-0 loss to Charlton in November.

The Terriers have lost twice more in the league since then, including Clark's final match.

Academy manager Mark Lillis has been placed in temporary charge of the first team.

It's crazy and I can't quite get my head around it.

I know a few Huddersfield season ticket holders - I haven't spoken with them today, but they were confident, that despite a tough league - this was their year after the knock-backs they've had in the last few years.

I know it's a tough league with both Sheffield teams staking a claim and Charlton running away with it, but they are in there and amongst it - it seems a really odd decision and wonder if it's internal politics.

Chairman Dean Hoyle said the move had been made with a view to achieving promotion this season.

Clark guided the club to two successive play-off campaigns, but last night's 1-0 defeat by Sheffield United at the Galpharm left them trailing the top two by four having picked up just two points from the last nine.

Academy manager Mark Lillis, who has just return to the club as Academy Manager, will take charge of the first team until a new manager is appointed.

Hoyle, who appointed Clark as successor to Stan Ternent in December 2008 and backed him with big finances to revamp the squad, said in a club statement: "This was a very difficult decision - not one taken lightly or in response to one result. Concerns have been raised over recent weeks.

"Lee and his coaching staff have put their all into the job over the past three seasons and he has made a huge contribution to the club.

"However, with 16 matches to go, we still have an opportunity to achieve promotion and we have made this change with this in mind."

Clark's side lost out to Millwall in the 2009-10 play-offs and then in the 2010-11 final to Peterborough at Old Trafford. Either side of that match, they strung together an Football League record unbeaten sequence of 43 matches.

Wow, lost only 3 in the last 55 games or something.

Could this be a case of 'be careful what you wish for' with the Huddersfield fans.

That's some run they've been on, unless they've drawn 45 or something.

They are speculating sacked because he applied for the Leeds job.

Apparently this constitutes breach of contract. I may be mistaken but I don't think the right to seek alternative employment is a legal right you can sign away.

Its always the same list of failed managers for every job. Phil Brown, Dave Jones, Colin ******. Always the same. Mediocre managers.
