Bad-boy Guerrero hit with EIGHT-match ban for 'worst foul of the season
Hamburg striker Paolo Guerrero has been handed an eight-match ban for a horror challenge dubbed the 'worst foul of the season'. The 28-year-old was sent off on Saturday for a violent lunge at Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich
The Peru international scythed down Ulreich as he attempted to shepherd the ball out of play. Guerrero was given a straight red card for the challenge in the 54th minute of his side's 4-0 defeat.
Afterwards Guerrero was unrepentant and could not understand what all the fuss was about. 'Their goalkeeper was able to carry on - it is not like he got injured,' he said.
'I cannot claim that I intended to play the ball, no. At that moment, I was not really considering it - I was frustrated. But such things don't just happen to me and to be quite honest, I cannot understand all the fuss.'
Hamburg's Danish sporting director Frank Arnesen said they would appeal the decision. 'I am very disappointed by the verdict,' he said. 'I do not excuse the foul but, compared to other fouls, I was not expecting such a heavy punishment.'
It is not the first time that Guerrero has made headlines for the wrong reasons. Last season he was banned for five matches for throwing a plastic beer mug at a spectator, while he has on several occasions upset the Hamburg hierarchy by returning late after trips home to Peru
