Sad news, I hope he pulls through.

A mate of mine who played in the same team died on the pitch. It is an aweful thing to happen. The opposing keeper dropped kicked the ball out, my mate made a defensive header. We all moved up with the ball, I turned round and saw my mate laying motionless, he died of a brain hemorrage. My worst memory of football

If the worst has happened, I would imagine it would be an hour or two before it is announced. There are certain formalities which have to be gone through.
