It's not about that though. If BR were looking to buy an unproven striker for 35m, then I could understand why people might get really worked up about that. Selling a striker who managed half a dozen goals and looked lost for most of last season for around 17m is somewhat different.

I'm sorry, but striker is likely the most important part of a team. Next season we will only play with one so I think it's bloody important that the one who plays in the first XI is suited to the style we will play.

Now Carroll is not a **** player. Play to his strengths and he can scare the life out of opposition defenders. Chuck it in the air and watch him bully CB's and make them panic.

But play it over the top and he'll never out pace the CB. Ask him to run all over the pitch to link play and it won't happen. He isn't lazy, he just isn't capable. Ask him to play quick one touch passing and then spinning his marker and he can't really do that. His touch is generally poor.

Dirk Kuyt was a good player for us but we'd never ask him to try and beat a full back. He can't do it.

Whilst I'm all for giving players chances, what is the point in keeping Carroll when he is not the type of player we require? We don't need a target man, so why keep him?

If its just to avoid a loss on the fee then that's foolish. The longer we keep him, the less he'll be worth.

After seeing his displays v Chelsea I looked forward to seeing Carroll this year, but he doesn't suit.

That's true. But Cole has experience of playing in a 4-3-3 under Mourinho and he came through the West Ham academy which has always preached the value of the passing game. Because of all this, and Rodgers' past experience of working with him, perhaps he feels Cole has the greater potential to adapt to his system.

However, it could also be that he would ideally like to sell both of them, but realises that Carroll is the most saleable player right now, largely due to Cole's ridiculous contract. That to me is not a purely financial decision, but just the reality of the situation. Looking at the article from the Newcastle Chronicle that Shaggy posted, which stated that the Geordies love the return of one of their own, that would seem to back up that belief.

Absolutely. Getting rid of Carroll (especially without having ever seen him train in person) is madness. Having played a Carroll-lite type at Swansea for all last year the idea that Andy won't fit the system seems to just be the most convenient excuse. No wonder he's absolutely livid.

Fair enough mate. It's all about opinions and personally I would like to ideally see the back of Cole, but perhaps the reality of the situation makes that difficult. Maybe Rodgers feels he can adapt his game due to the reasons I stated above, or maybe he has just accepted that we would have to pay more money (ie Cole's contract) to get him out.

No, you're right. Danny Graham is far more like David Villa isn't he.

And Downing has made a career out of mediocrity (one which he is moving towards the end of). Carroll hasn't and he demonstrated real improvement towards the end of the season. The circumstances are entirely different.

I'd have no problem with it if Rodgers had said differently

However he stated that every player would get a chance to show themselves and that should include Downing & Carroll

In one of his first interviews he said he would take the opportunity to watch everybody in training and give them all a chance to show what they have got

Hes done that to Cole & Aquilani yet hasnt extended that courtesy to Carroll

I don't have any sympathy for Andy Carroll, he's been very fortunate and I'm sure he will do well wherever he goes. Seems like a decent bloke, but as many have stated he just isn't suited to our intended style of play. There's no point keeping hold of him and using him occasionally, that's a waste of his ability and wages that could be better spent. He never really seemed to be a good fit for us, let's get rid whilst his value is reasonably high.
