So if you won 1-0 at home then lost 1-2 away in the second leg you would go through.

Away goals can still come into play after full time too.

Imagine both legs ended 0-0. Then both teams scored in extra time, the team with the away goal would go through.

Critics have argued this is unfair as it gives one team a potential 120 minutes to score an away goal whereas the other team only gets 90. Fans of this rule would argue that it's balanced out by the fact that one team gets an extra 30 minutes playing at home, however it does not seem to be a fair comparison and would logically be seen as simply the luck of the draw (or the advantage of winning your group as opposed to the opposition finishing 2nd in theirs when considering the 1st knockout round).
