The papers really are shockingly bad..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

“First of all, I don’t know if Rio has turned his back on it. I don’t know the details from his side.
"But that’s what I want to achieve - help take this team to a World Cup in Brazil.
“At my age, there’s no better stage for a footballer to play on. Especially after beating Brazil. On our day, with a full-strength squad, we’re capable of beating the best.
“I’m not tired, I’m fine. My body’s good, I’m good.
"I have my own personal programme I stick to, but that’s the same as any other player - two days of recovery after a game, taking it easy, so I’m fine.”

I think on their day England give anyone a game. You cant tell me a team with Hart, Cole/Baines, Johnson, Rio, Wilshire, Gerrard, Rooney and to an extent Sturridge and Lennon cant beat teams.
They are good players. They are just **** when together. This England side should be achieving more than it is.*Except Michael, who died.

International football is a different scenario, of the players you have listed Baines, Sturridge and Lennon have never really replicated their club form for England; despite being England's main man Rooney hasn't really played well at international level for ages; Wilshire is always injured, Rio hasn't played for England for ages...Originally posted by Alex View PostI think on their day England give anyone a game. When you consider this and all the dross around them, the England team is nothing special. I think that as a team they are about where they deserve to be. If all the players you listed played to their club level England would be a better side, but experience suggests that isn't going to happen...The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Thats it I suppose. I think you can argue that Gerrard has never replicated Liverpool form for England. Same with Barnes really.*Except Michael, who died.

We can give anyone a game and certainly have players that have ability, but it can actually be argued England overachieve.Originally posted by Alex View PostI think on their day England give anyone a game. Because of our population, GDP and lack of communication networks to Europe we exceed our potential due to our footballing experience.
It's our inflated opinion of the Premier League combined with our media whipping up expectation, that makes people think we can actually do something on the international stage.Last edited by Muddled; 22-03-13, 11:20 AM.

He also said Ferdinand is a "fantastic player" which we all know is exactly the thing you say when you're sticking the boot into someone.

Perhaps, but then again, that can be said for most ok teams. England have consistently failed to hit the heights with subsequent 'golden generations', and while their qualification record over that time has been good, they've benefitted massively from almost predetermined groupings over the last number of years.Originally posted by Alex View PostI think on their day England give anyone a game. Not quite flat track bullies, at least in a traditional sense, as their overall quality never exceeds anything more than sufficient.
Which is why they're a quarter-final team."I will make the boys feel your support"
