He had Tottenham flying and he was probably at his peak as a manager, everything seemed to be going well and his brand of football was exciting to watch. I doubt he's great tactically but after the snoozefest that was Capello, Redknapp would have been a breath of fresh air, Hodgson is a nothing manager.

I think under Redknapp we'd have seen something like

    ----------------Hart
    --------Jagielka-----Terry
    Johnson-------------------Cole
    -----------------Carrick
    ----------Gerrard
    Walcott---------Rooney-----Townsend
    -------------Sturridge

Something like that, I think Terry might have stayed on for some reason if Redknapp got the job, much better man manager.

That looks much more threatening than two banks of four & 10 men behind the ball

Good in hindsight, but you wouldn't have picked townsend, sturidge & not picked Baines (for cole) 2 years ago

I suppose what England need is someone who can send the team out with a proper plan for how to nullify the opposition's strengths and prevent them from playing whilst also capitalising on their weaknesses in order to nick a goal or two. Someone adept at setting-up his team to beat opposing teams that are considered stronger than his own, especially in tournament football. Rafa.

You'd see Parker, Dawson and Lennon, possibly Walker and Defoe too.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I can see the FA sniffing round Rodgers soon if we stay on our current trajectory.
I have one word to offer - honesty. I couldn't be devious if I tried. Joe Fagan.

He'd still be manager now though, Redknapp had worked with Townsend at Tottenham but things may have worked out differently you're right.

Cole is one of my favourite players in the premier league era I've admitted this before so I would always give him the nod and even if Redknapp went with Baines its still a better side than Hodgson picks.

Seems there's more sense in the German national set up than ours - shock and horror I know

Hodgson says Beckenbauer blocked his path to Germany job

England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that Franz Beckenbauer may have been the key factor in him missing out on becoming Germany's first foreign coach.

Hodgson was approached in 1998 by German Football Association (DFB) president Egidius Braun.

But he said former Germany boss Beckenbauer felt the Englishman would have blocked upcoming German coaches.

"It was an honour when Braun called me," Hodgson told Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

"I was on the president's wish-list. He would have had problems convincing people to accept a foreign coach though.

"At the time, my friend Franz Beckenbauer pointed out that a foreign coach of the Germany national team would not have helped the German coaching programme - the up-and-coming coaches."

Hodgson, now 66, had led Switzerland to the 1994 World Cup finals and to the 1996 European Championship.

He was manager of Blackburn at the time the job was offered to him.

The DFB decided on Erich Ribbeck to replace Berti Vogts, who resigned following Germany's quarter-final elimination to Croatia at the 1998 World Cup.

Ribbeck, 61 when appointed, did not match Beckenbauer's "up-and-coming" template either, though since his departure two years later, the DFB have appointed young German coaches in Rudi Voller (40 at the time), Jurgen Klinsmann (39) and Joachim Low (46).

Hodgson was sacked by Blackburn in November 1998 and returned for a second spell at Inter Milan, where he was named technical director.

The Bodge in charge of Germany?

I've never heard of Egidius Braun but clearly he resides in a secure institution somewhere.

Beckenbaur seems an absolute legend. Always says the right things, plus he voted for Australia to host the 2022 world cup. So he is a legend in my book
