If I was Rooney I'd have turned down the pen and waited for a real goal to make the record.

Would have made better history, a better legacy and a better anecdote for his after dinner speaking gigs a few years from now.

Agree, but only if he shook his head and wagged a finger at Raheem.

I can't believe that we are debating the merits of Wayne Rooney achieving a minor achievement in a team which, historically, hasn't achieved anything.
          Are we winning?

Well, historically it has. Only 8 others teams have won the World Cup in almost 100 years. I know it was almost 50 years ago. But that isnt what you are trying to suggest.

Edit: 7 other teams. 8 in total.

Rooney is overrated; but this is an achievement & he's a very good player. Some way from world class, but very good.
                  3rd place. Worst champions ever.

                    5 – San Marino

                    4 – Croatia, Switzerland

                    3 – Kazakhstan

2 – Andorra, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Montenegro, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia.

1 – Argentina, Ecuador, Holland, Liechenstein, Lithuania, Macedonia, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Uruguay.

I would back Any English decent striker to have as good record against the ****e above,....3 goals scored against top 10 ranked teams. He should be applauded for his longevity but its more a sad reflection on Englands lack of quality upfront than a celebration of Englands greatest ever scorer

Fontane scored just under a third of Rooney's total goals, in just one tournament.

Muller scored 68 goals in just 62 games.

Doesn't prove anything either way but I thought I'd play Norris McWhirter for a bit.

It's definitely impressive that Rooney has scored 50 goals for England, however until he puts in a big performance at a tournament, and as his record shows, he will always be a flat track bully.

Good achievement but in this day and age with the volume of international matches and the dross served up in qualifiers I wouldn't be surprised if another striker tops Rooney within 15 years, probably sooner.

Is he an all time England Great? Unfortunately I'd have to say yes, he'll retire with the most caps and goals.

I dont think there are more or less international matching today than 60 years ago?
