But it was his insistence that England, led by Roy Hodgson, who pipped Redknapp to the post of manager, had never had a better opportunity to win an international tournament that stood out. In a bizarre exchange, however, just as newsreader Toby Gilles had quoted him directly, Redknapp interrupted, challenging the veracity of the quotation.

“I never said that,” he claimed on hearing his words re-broadcast on TalkSport. “I just said I think we should make the semi-finals at least. I don’t want to pile any more pressure on Roy.” But, as Gilles, sitting opposite him in the radio studio insisted, Redknapp had indeed said that. He had also said that the players at Hodgson’s disposal – particularly Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, Harry Kane and Ross Barkley – comprised the strongest pool of talent available to an England manager in a generation. “It’s the best chance we’ll have,” he added.
