IMO he is currently the best player in the world, past and present. The likes of Pele and Maradonna were great but Messi is in a different class

No doubt he is the greatest but he needs to win a world cup at some point and play a key role in that win to silence the doubters.

It's impossible to say Messi is better than Pele or Maradona, it is a discussion without a correct 'end off' answer. Diferent generations posed diferent problems. Look at the agricultural defending Pele and Maradona had to endure for one thing, ferocious tackling lke they had in the 60's, 70's and early 80's just doesn't exist now. However they are 3 of the all time greats without question. Zidane as well, a totally incredible player to watch. We are lucky to get to see Messi in an era where football is televised to the level it is. I am sure if SKY had been around in the time of Maradona and Pele, we would have got to see a lot more of them as well.
            Modifying post.

different attitudes to lifestyle and training will also make a difference.

Messi is the best of his generation but impossible to really say who is or was the best of all time (if I was forced to pick one though it would be Messi)

Oh great, this debate again. I'm looking forward to all the new insights coming our way.

                .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I thought we'd all agreed the true test was against Stoke away on a cold, wet Tuesday night. Until we see that we'll never know how good he is.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

                    Wednesday.

Stoke are crap on Tuesdays. (Although tbf fair, Stoke is crap every day of the week.)

The only way to put it is, Pele was the greatest of his generation, Maradonna was the greatest of his, now Messi is the greatest of this.
                          *Except Michael, who died.
