I do buy into the theory that the manager is technically and tactically inferior though.

They lost because they set themselves up for defeat. The problem may have been in the middle of the park, but it was caused by the wide fullbacks of Italy. Abate and Balzaretti played parallel alongside pirlo and de rossi allowing montolivo and marchisio to come into their more familar central roles and sit behind stevie g and parker effectively creating a 4 on 2 situation for most of the game in the centre of the park.

Had England not been so defensive minded the likes of walcott and young could have pushed higher and forced balzaretti and abate back into their traditional roles hence stretching the 4 more central minded italian players, marchisio and montolivo are not wingers (this is why the walcott sub actually made sense to me, however it obvs was not made for this reason and walcott became as defensively minded as milner had been). this would have also taken the pressure off gerrard and parker. i only counted england attacking on the counter with 4 players twice, thats the problem. the compare this performance at the euros to the how the dutch played spain in south africa is also ludacris imo, when other teams (ironically often Italy) set up to play counter attack they support their front men on the break, England didn't do this at the Euros, Holland did in S.A, theres a difference between playing counter attacking football and playing the **** Hodgson likes.

To say if Capello had stayed England would not have made it out of the group is also stupid, it obviously can't be proved any which way, but i think that his style would have forced Italy to approach the game differently, probably more so in their natural counter attacking way and thus England would have had more of an even chance unlike the 37% or whatever it was possesion.

Italy were allowed to play 2 men at the back for the majority of the game, thats embaressing because despite what the press have been saying, England individually are just as good as that Italian team, in the past the problem has been a team of individuals, now they're a team but they're one that is led out with no desire to 'play' the game.

Best team won alas. Don't think England would have got through Ireland's group.

        Examination: Self-deception 101

Compare and contrast the contradictions in the following statements.

"England lose in the quarter-finals again"

"England are in the top eight teams in Europe"

"England were the highest ranked team in their first round group"

        "England have exceeded expectations"

Extra marks will be awarded if you can resolve the contradictions in a way that reveals the magic touch of miracle man and top, top man-manager, Roy "King Midas" Hodgson.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

thank **** thats over, rather we wimped out against Italy than being totally humiliated by Germany in the semi

and Milner should now be put out to grass with the other carthorses

          Keep this quiet

Carroll was to receive and hold it, Walcott was to run off him and use his pace against tired legs. And this is ignoring the fact that they replaced two ineffective players in Welbeck and Milner - Young only stayed on the pitch because he was a penalty taker for Villa (in my opinion).

We set up to contain and fluke a goal, and if we couldn't, we'd take our chances with penalties. A tactical masterclass from a tactical dinosaur.
            Its fine mate.

Normally I dont give a toss about england but this time there were six liverpool players in the squad so you get more into it.

Hodgson can only play one way and thats defending deep and looking to counterf. Like I said you dont need great players to play that way and thats good because england dont have that many good attacking players. You need good organisation and pace on the break.

I know why he brought walcott on but for me thats not the way to play. I coach little kids andive never set my teams up to play that way. its frustrating because hodgsons footballing philosophy is against what southgate and the fa are trying to achieve.

I wish.hodgson had never picked henderson carroll downing and kelly and made gerrard captain because I could have.gone through this tournament enjoying the football and not giving a **** about england.

Whilst I can't stand half the England team and really detest Roy, I don't understand the mentallity of Liverpool fans having joy at Englands exit. This was probably Gerrards last chance at a major tournament and he could've done so as Captain. It would've been great for him and I'm gutted he and the other Liverpool lads are out. I really couldn't care less about the rest of them.

Feel sorry for Stevie G, Interviewed a couple of days ago talking about going out with a fight and due to Woy we went out with a whimper.

Pretty embarrassing really, the Italians will get tonked in semi's

Absolutely I've said it before, England will never ever win anything, unless they change the whole freemason political FA bollocks and actually work on merit. It really is a nation of losers and abject failure. Glad our boys aren't injured, that's all that matters really.

I don't agree. Man for man, Italy are a better team. The attacking options for England are a ****ing joke. Milner, Young, Welbeck, (Rooney) is appallingly **** by international standards. In fact, I'm struggling to think of another team in the entire tournament with a poorer attacking four.

Italy have only been 'tonked' a handful of times in their history. Despite this being a relatively poor Italian side, they're like the Germans in the sense that they have the self-belief and arrogance to give anyone a game. I was hugely impressed with their performance against Spain - one of the few teams I've seen really give Spain a proper game.

Italy v Germany should be a cracker. Germany are favourites, but it won't be a walkover.

It's the whole culture of this country, from the dinosaurs at the FA to the press up to the dumbing down/overhype from England fans which for me outweighs what Gerrard and co may be feeling.
