The future of Fabio Borini, meanwhile, remains unresolved.
The Italian returned home early from Liverpool’s tour of the USA with a shoulder injury, and has been deliberating over a possible £14m switch to Sunderland.
The Wearsiders would ideally like a decision from Borini this week, but Liverpool are keen not to part with the 23-year-old until a suitable replacement has been identified.
Borini fuelled speculation he would be moving to the North East by ‘favouriting’ a Tweet confirming Sunderland’s £10m signing of Jack Rodwell from Manchester City on Tuesday.

Liverpool's Fabio Borini DOES want to join Sunderland, insists Gus Poyet
Aug 15, 2014 14:12 By James Hunter
Gus Poyet says the delay in the deal to bring Fabio Borini to Wearside does not mean the striker's commitment is in doubt
Gus Poyet insists Fabio Borini’s commitment to Sunderland is not in doubt – despite his protracted transfer saga.
The Black Cats agreed a £14m deal with Borini’s club Liverpool four weeks ago today, but since then there has been little progress – and that has led some to question whether the Italian wants to move to Wearside.
But, while Poyet admits the situation is no nearer reaching a conclusion, he says no one should doubt Borini’s desire to return to the club where he excelled on loan last season.
“There haven’t been too many changes [in the situation],” said Poyet, whose side kicks-off its Premier League campaign at West Bromwich Albion tomorrow.
“It’s not the case [that Borini’s commitment is in doubt].
“I can assure every single supporter that is not the case. Please trust me.
“I cannot tell you everything because that is not normal in football and it is not fair on everybody, but it’s not that Borini does not want to come and that we are trying to convince him - not at all.
“I have talked to Fabio and things are clear. It’s just a matter of doing it at the right time.”
Borini suffered a shoulder injury in Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the USA and only returned to training this week, with Poyet adding: “He has just come back to train and work his way to fitness, so he wouldn’t be available tomorrow in any case [if the deal had been completed by now].”

We have agreed the fee with Sunderland so from our standpoint we want this wrapped up as soon as possible.
It is him holding the deal and hopefully he'll make up his mind sooner the better.
BTW he is back in full training so we should know fairly soon.
Poyet seems to be still confident that he'll sign because otherwise he would be pursuing a different striker.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Monday crunch for Poyet’s Borini pursuit
by Chris Young

GUS POYET hopes to learn more over Sunderland’s lengthy pursuit of Liverpool striker Fabio Borini on Monday.
Sunderland have a fortnight left of the transfer window to wrap up a move for Borini - more than four weeks after the Black Cats’ £14million bid was accepted by Liverpool.
Poyet revealed last week that it wasn’t a lack of commitment from Borini to re-join Sunderland which was holding up the move.
And the Echo understands that there is more to the hold-up than simply Liverpool waiting to sign another striker before they rubber-stamp Borini’s departure.
A second loan move for Borini could be a possibility too.
But Poyet, who has continued to remain positive over Sunderland’s prospects of signing Borini, said: “I should know something today or tomorrow, I hope. We’ll see.”
Victor Moses had been linked as a possible alternative to Borini, but the Chelsea winger joined Stoke City on a season-long loan over the weekend.
However, it is understood that Moses was not a player who Poyet was attracted to.
Poyet remains keen to reinforce his squad before the September 1 deadline though, with a midfielder and a defender on his radar, together with Borini.
The late unavailability of Santiago Vergini at The Hawthorns highlighted Sunderland’s thin options in the back-line, with Wes Brown forced to move from centre-half to right-back against the Baggies.
“I know that we need a few,” said Poyet.
“Not one, but a few.
“There are areas in the team that when you set it up, you are missing players.
“There are a few things we’re still working on.
“It’s no secret we’re trying.
“I can assure you more will come. How many is impossible to tell.”
