    New Premier League U21 Competition

The Premier League have confirmed the creation of a new Under-21 competition designed to bridge the gap between the academy and first team.

The first national showcase for Under-21 players will launch on August 17 when Chelsea host Manchester City and Reading visit West Ham.

Teams from 17 Premier League and six Championship clubs, effectively all those who applied for category one status, will be divided into three groups.

From January, the sides will then be placed into three pools based on their performance, leading to a knockout stage and final.

The emphasis will be on playing Under-21 players, with each team limited to just three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.

"Each stage of a player's development is tailored to ensuring they have the best possible chance of progressing," Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said.

"The new Barclays Under-21 Premier League addresses one of the most critical points - the transition from academy football to the highest standards in the first team.

"We believe this competitive environment, where fans can also come along to watch the next generation of Premier League and international players, will help deliver more talented home grown boys to that next level."

    * National Group 1 - eight teams: Arsenal, Blackburn, Bolton, Everton, Norwich, Reading, West Brom, West Ham.

    * National Group 2 - eight teams: Aston Villa, Manchester United, Newcastle, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland, Tottenham, Watford.

    * National Group 3 - seven teams: Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Wolves.

like this. like a home grown next gen tournament.

dont know why they want three over aged players including, they should all be under 21.

it will give the youngsters a valid competition to get some proper games in and allow them to prove they are ready for first team consideration.
we just need to make sure their contracts are watertight, as they will be on show to other clubs...

What's the incentive? Why would players/clubs take this more serious than a reserve game?
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

This is what I'm wondering where does this fall into the pecking order? Is it above or below the reserve team? It seems like another step between the youth teams and the reserves. The reserves in theory should be a higher level as it includes first team players. However I guess that the U21s will be desperate to do well whereas some in the reserves might not be arsed the might be happy to go through the motions to get their big pay packets. So I'm not really sure what to think of this.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Was just thinking the same. He could captain the side and really use his experience.

Not only that, he could manage the team. Will we still have all the other teams?

I wouldn't want him anywhere near that dugout. Managing is a bit much.nbut they could use his knowledge of pressure situations.
