Joining The Analytics Community
You have a unique opportunity to be part of this community. Register your interest in this project and we will send you our OPTA data set for every ‘on the ball’ event for every Premier League player in every match in the entire 2011-12 Premier League season FOR FREE.
This data is designed to be broken down, analysed, graphed and visualised however you see fit. We have made it available to encourage and inspire the next level of analytics. Our hope is that the data is used to create new performance measures, tools for player/team comparison and profiling, season-long analysis for benchmarking players’ performance and contextualising these performances based on playing position and opposition.
Below are just a very few of the areas that we at Manchester City would be interested in discussing with you and in which we feel the area of performance analytics requires further development:
Position specific metrics to accurately measure performance and allow for player comparison
Seasonal player profiling
Data visualisation
Once we email you the data, why not share your work with us? We will work directly with those of you who come up with good concepts and also connect you with others who are working in the same research area. A collective approach will help the community to make more rapid progress and we want you to join us in being part of it.
We will be running a research competition in the coming months whereby the work you submit to us will be reviewed by our Performance Analysis department and OPTA with the best projects being published on our MCFC Analytics page and the OPTAPro website to share with the world.
Furthermore, as recognition of your contribution to the performance analytics discipline we will invite those with the best projects to come to our training ground to present their work and to then share with us the match day experience, observing how the Performance Analysis department supports our first team during a Premier League game.

MCFC Analytics is a project we are launching for this very reason, to share the data that we have with the analytics community, and further to that, engage directly with the community to see where the journey takes us all. The data is not click to download for security purposes you will recieve the data from [email protected] within 24 hours over the launch weekend, after which data will be sent every 48 hours.

What data is available to you.
Full (Lite) Data
This data set is every ‘on the ball’ event for every Premier League player in every match from the entire 2011-12 Premier League season.
This data will be suitable for everyone who has some basic data management skills as the sheet contains 10,370 rows and 185 columns of unique raw data. The data is presented in .csv format.
Advanced Data Opportunities
This data is a time coded feed that lists all player action events within the game with a player, team, event type, minute and second for each action, together with the x/y/z co-ordinates for each event. Each event has a series of qualifiers describing it and every event collected by OPTA for a given match is listed within this feed. This type of feed would allow for heat map, touch map, passing matrices and mapping attacking play and distribution.
The use of this data will need a considerable amount of time to process and requires certain programming ability due to its complex raw format. The data is presented in .xml format. This advanced data will initially be for Manchester City players and team only for the entire 2011-12 season. This data will only then be provided after a successful project submission and review by Manchester City and OPTA.
Should your project/research be developing into an interesting area, there will be the potential to be provided with the same data set for the entire Premier League.

Anyone fancy it? I'm going to be registering for the advanced data if anyone goes for the other one and fancies a swap?
