I don't see anything wrong with them not wearing the poppies.Originally posted by Gibbo View PostThis may be the wrong thread, but what do our Irish lads think of Mclean an O'shea not wearing poppies yesterday?
It's not on imo, was just wondering if you yourselves would wear one.
You could say they're making a statement by not wearing them, but they're also making a statement by wearing them. If that's not something they're comfortable with then they're within their rights not to wear them.
Wearing a poppy or supporting any other cause or charity, should be an individual choice and not something players, or anyone else in society, feels pushed into because of a weight of expectation.A humble guy with healthy desire.

The irony is lost on a lot of people who complain about those not wearing poppies that a whole generation fought for individual freedom and one of those freedoms is the choice of whether to wear a poppy or not.Originally posted by Gibbo View PostThis may be the wrong thread, but what do our Irish lads think of Mclean an O'shea not wearing poppies yesterday?

They could all have chosen not to fight though. Each to their own. I'm ambivalent about all the poppy thing.Originally posted by Leyton388 View PostThe irony is lost on a lot of people who complain about those not wearing poppies that a whole generation fought for individual freedom and one of those freedoms is the choice of whether to wear a poppy or not.

you have to remember where McLean is from, he grew up in Derry city, James would have have had neighbours, friends and known families who were directly effected by Bloody Sunday all those years ago....
to expect him to wear a poppy to remember the fallen dead of the British Empire, in my opinion, is wrong...
it's a personal decision for anyone to wear what they want to wear, including James...
(btw - I'm also from Derry...)

Some comments (not on here) about it are ridiculous! People calling for him to "**** off home" I mean it's beyond a joke.
The same people will claim those died for our "freedom" how can anyone be free if the same people are all but demanding you do something, against your will, or leave. It's madness.
I'm not really well educated on the topic which is a little embarrassing but from my point of view I wear a poppy because I see it as a respect for those caught up in a war. It's not the fault individual soldiers for the wrong doings of the government/country. However that said I'm aware the poppy to others doesn't represent the same to them as it does to me.
He's not disrespecting the dead by not wearing one. That much is a fact.Vive la France

Fair enough (to every reply)
Wondered what was thought from an Irish perspective, I didn't know it was felt that strongly about if I'm completely honest. I mean Podolski wore one and he's German.
But fair enough. I'm not trying to say whats right or wrong, just the first time I've ever seen a footballer, or anyone for that matter, refuse.
I respect all armed forces personnel, Race, colour or religion. At the end of the day they only do what they are told. The times they are a changin'.
