Probably. But I just feel he's too good for that. He's ****ing miles better than Cole, and an even higher level than someone like Litmanen (and I say that with a heavy heart cos Jari was wonderful). He's just too good to miss, and only 28. Yeah we all know he's had problems but it's definitely a risk worth taking. He'd make a lot of the £££ back on worldwide shirts sales alone. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

That's my feeling too.
I have set my expectations low.
1) he's not coming
2) if he does, he's going to be guff.
That way anything else is a bonus.
Oh I don't know.

I tend to agree with a lot of what has been said in these two posts. I have massive reservations about Sneijder. I'm not questioning his talent by the way.
This transfer doesn't make any sense. It's the Sahin scenario all over again. What this deal means, assuming it isn't a PR distraction, is effectively taking on a player who hasn't played in 3.5 months. A player who is used to combative powerful midfielders doing the work for him and supplying clinical strikers.
We got rid of Sahin on the basis of he doesn't fit our style of play, allegedly and isn't fit enough to contribute to a midfield 3. Our solution then is to get a player less fit than him, who on top of that has suffered a critical dip in form and hasn't shown any motivation for the game since Mourinho left. His impact, even if fit, would almost undoubtedly be that of Julio Cesar's or Maicon's whilst he gets used to a new league, a new manager and new team mates. He would then be supported by Lucas Leiva who has been trouble by a knee injurie and a muscle tear in the past 12 months. Steven Gerrard who is in the twilight of his career and has on numerous occasions been left in the dust by players running at him (anyone who is expecting Sneijder to not do the same is delusional). Then there's Joe Allen in his worst form since joining Liverpool and then Jordan Henderson whom the manager doesn't trust well enough to start.
What does Sneijder then bring to the team? Suarez already has goals from direct free kicks and is always threatening when he takes one. Gerrard come hell or high water will take our corners and is our best penalty converter by a country mile. Will Sneijder then be our missing link in the #10 position? He wasn't with Holland, he like everyone else had a stinker at the Euros. And despite scoring 5 goals at the world cup Sneijder wasn't a playmaker, he had a bad tournament considering his intended role.
Does he then recreate his Real Madrid and Inter form? I'm sure that after his dip in form, lack of match fitness and motivation supplying Suarez, who mainly operates outside the box preferring to get the ball and then run at players instead of being on the recieving end of a through ball. Or will he manage to turn Sturridge into a clinical striker? Not saying Sneijder wasn't an ace playmaker in top form but it's a bit different finding Raul, Higuain, van Nistelrooy, Milito or Eto'o when compared with finding Suarez or an unfit (according to the manager) Sturridge - ironically enough on the topic of players lacking motivation a 2008 Torres would've been ideal for his preferred playing style. Will Sneijder track back and play more centrally (thusly changing his mind after lambasting Benitez for playing him too forward or too deep)? If we couldn't find space for Sahin who preferred to be fed the ball from defence before making the killer ball in a lightning fast counter-attack. How the hell are we going to fit in Sneijder who does exactly the same thing, except further away from his misfiring team mates? How will we play possession football with an unfit player, who doesn't press and is best suited for counter-attacking football? Even if all of these things were wrong, what's preventing him from doing exactly the thing people were afraid of with Sahin? Will he hit peak form around may and then ditch us for that last big move of his career?
I just don't see any reason for us signing him. He'd be the biggest earner in the team by a long shot, doing so days after announcing how we're cutting down on regular pay and improving bonuses. He'd be unfit and with dubious motiviation to say the least. It'd be a short term deal which most likely benefits the club he goes to next. And his playing style doesn't suit the gameplan we've "sacrificed" 6 months trying to hone.
This whole thing smells of bull**** and even if it doesn't it reeks of bad decision making.
Great post. At this stage of his career, Sneijder seems more motivated by money than pretty much anything else. His fitness record is poor in a much slower and less physically demanding league. How he fits into the team is debatable. You're looking at someone who is going to have the midfield built around them. Sure there will be commercial benefits to it that the club can extract, but would he really benefit the team as a whole? I'm thinking just of how the likes of Lucas and Allen have looked shattered at various points in the season, due to having to do all the defensive midfield work by themselves. If we are lucky, I'd see Sneijder as someone like Van der Vaart at Spurs a few seasons back, who provided the odd bit of individual magic, but was tapped out after about sixty minutes. At worst, Joe Cole 2.0.
It looks nice on paper having Lucas, Gerrard and Sneijder in midfield, although most fantasizing about this seem to forgetting that Lucas is coming back from a major injury and Gerrard's legs have gone as he enters the twilight of his career. Right now, this midfield needs energy and some defensive commitment, which is why it's no surprise Jordan Henderson has been one of our better midfielders. For me he'd be a luxury signing, which we cannot afford (more in a functional than financial sense) at this moment in time.
