The Mauritanian federation has been forced to deny that the country’s president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, ordered a penalty shootout in the 63rd minute of the Super Cup final out of boredom.
Abdel Aziz was in attendance to watch the final between FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar last weekend which was abruptly called to a halt with the score level at 1-1, to the astonishment of the rest of the crowd, before the referee signalled for a shootout.
The decision has provoked outrage in Mauritania amid accusations that Abdel Aziz had become impatient with the slow tempo of the match, eventually won by Tevragh Zeina.
But the Mauritanian federation’s president, Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane, wrote in a statement: “I deny in the strongest terms the intervention of the President of the Republic. The decision was made due to organisational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams.”That rug really tied the room together.

Yaya Touré has reportedly reacted very badly to missing out on being named African footballer of the year for a fifth successive year, apparently describing the decision as one which “brings shame” to the continent.
Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won the award, which is decided via a vote of coaches and technical directors from Confederation of African Football nations, becoming the first player from Gabon to be recognised in such a manner. He got 143 points, having scored 18 goals in 17 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund this season, with Touré coming second with 136 points and Swansea’s André Ayew third with 112 points.
Touré described Aubameyang as “brilliant” but, according to AFP and L’Equipe, the Manchester City midfielder did not take coming second to the 26-year-old well when speaking to French radio station RFI afterwards, with the 32-year-old’s fury seemingly centering on the fact he helped Ivory Coast win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015.
Touré, who was named African footballer of the year in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, is reported to have said: “I’m very, very disappointed. It’s sad to see Africa react this way, that they don’t think African achievements are important.
“I think this is what brings shame to Africa, because to act in that way is indecent. But what can we do about it? Us Africans, we don’t show that Africa is important in our eyes. We favour more what’s abroad than our own continent. That is pathetic.
“As I’ve been told many times, you can’t take care of Africa too much because Africa will be the first to let you down.”That rug really tied the room together.

Hosts Gabon were handed a favourable draw for January’s Africa Cup of Nations, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s side to face Cameroon, Burkina Faso and the debutants Guinea-Bissau in Group A while the heavyweights Algeria and Senegal will face off in Group B.
The buildup to the tournament, which begins on 14 January, has been dominated by doubts over where it will be staged as the aftershocks of Gabonese presidential elections continue to be felt.
President Ali Bongo – who defeated the challenger Jean Ping to retain the post he has held since 2009 – was at the draw in Libreville on Wednesday night and he saw Les Panthères given a great chance of progressing past the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Elsewhere, the holders and favourites Ivory Coast were drawn in Group C and will face Togo, Morocco and DR Congo, while Algeria and Senegal – ranked second and third in Africa by Fifa – will contest Group B with Zimbabwe and Tunisia.
Ghana’s hopes of winning a first title since 1982 will rest of coming through a group that contains the seven-time winners Egypt, Mali and Uganda, who are also in the Black Stars’ World Cup qualifying group and played them in their last finals appearance in 1978, when Ghana triumphed 2-0 in the final. That rug really tied the room together.
