    Roberto Martinez

Is he really that good? He gets a lot of praise off the media for being a brilliant manager. I just don't get it. He isn't selling off his best players every season as far as I'm aware and for as long as I can remember they have always been in a relegation battle and generally don't start winning until the last 2 months of a season.

So why is he held up as some brilliant manager? Do they really play great football?

Personally, just don't see it. I think he is well over-hyped

Its a tough one for him. He never seems to be given money, is asked to make water into wine and always does by the skin of his teeth. Then when he does unearth a decent player he is usually sold within 12 months.

Wigan are a weird team, just seem happy to exist in the Prem.

Edit: After a quick look it seems they constantly make a decent profit in the transfer market. That coupled with the incresed TV money, maybe its just a money maker for Dave Whelan.

But I don't think they generally are that great a footballing side. They don't set the world alight. Teams with little or no money do just as well if not better. I just don't get how a manager can be constantly called brilliant or great when all he does is seem to motivate a side for the last 10 games of a season who can't be bothered for the other 28 games

Teams do strange things when fighting for survival.

I dont know with Martinez. I think his next job will be Everton, which will then be his top-ish level. Never seems the sort of bloke who will set the world alight. He speaks very well as a pundit, but that doesnt really mean much I suppose.

I do think they play good football and he has worked really well on a very restricted budget. He has had to sell his best players and reduce his wage bill and has still survived in the PL.

Wigan have one of the smallest crowds, highest per game policing fees and an owner who wishes to invest less. I'm pretty certain I heard at the start of the season that Whelan wants them to break even and they already have the smallest budget in the PL. The success of a manager has to be judged according to the situation they are in.

To some degree the good football thing depends on what you like. Wigan are tactically interesting and pass the ball neatly. They don't create that many chances though. I guess to some degree that is a matter of taste.

If he did get the Everton job that would be interesting. Still a restricted budget and a squad ill suited to his style of play but still a bigger budget than he has at Wigan. Given a few seasons it would be interesting to see if he could do something with them.

To some degree I think both he and Rodgers share weaknesses in terms of an unwillingness to concentrate on defence. That said Martinez switching to a back 3 last season was a materstroke (has been found out a bit this season though IMO).

Some of their football in the first half against Everton was as good as anything played by us or utd this season. obviously that was one game and I don't watch a lot but they are a 'footballing team' as opposed to many in the league.

I said it when we were linked with him and Ill say it now. I like the way he says 'Club'......'Cloob'

We are a very small 'cloob'

I'm not sure with Martinez. I think he's done a decent job without any money, and then there's the work he did with Swansea.

However, I was ferociously against his appointment and sacrificed a thousand ladybirds when I saw that photo of Martinez and Henry strolling down Miami. Thankfully (in my opinion), Henry and co went for Rodgers. I do think he's overrated in terms of this passing style of his, and I don't think he's great at motivating players.

He'll be the next Everton manager in my opinion.

Wigans squad is rubbish, he's a good manager just for keeping them in the prem.

He's done a decent job, they at least try to play football which is more than most of the smaller teams do, they have probably the smallest operating budget in the league and always have to sell their best players. I think he's a good manager working in difficult circumstances. Although strangely I do wonder if he would be able to keep up his level of performance at a club where expectations are higher.

Did you hear Whelan on TalkSport earlier? Talk about a defeatist attitude. It was embarrassing.
