I thought I detected some hostility (not hatred) from him - as you say, you see it a little different which is your prerogative of course.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Yes, absolutely, there'll be less ****ing swearing for one!

And she should carry her handbag with her at all times, just in case the male footballers get a bit rowdy like, and they should all have to call her ma'am, lets get some dominatrix action thrown in as well!

Maybe you need to have played to officiate well, maybe you don't. Who cares. The bottom line is if they do their job well in spite of not having played it then why should they not be able to officiate? There is no reason other than ignorant sexism. As long as they are subject to the exact same standards as male officials then there is no problem whatsoever IMO.

if women are up for the job, which they surely must be if they have worked their way up to the position then what is the problem ?

As to the question posted earlier that women would not be able to handle men surrounding them on the pitch, well I am sick of this happening in the game anyway, should be more like rugby where if you address the ref he is called Sir, and if you swear you get a card..... same for backchat, these multi-million pound footballers need some discipline instilled into them, I am sick of them moaning like girls to the ref everytime a decision goes against them.

I played in a game 2 weeks ago with a woman referee. It was a shambles. She was completely on top of all the admin (checking boots, jewellery, players registrations, even making sure we had an effing first aid box) but once the game started she was out of her depth.

She'd never played so couldn't interpret intent, blowing for stupid things and letting bad tackles go. In the end both captains agreed we'd ref it ourselves and told her when to blow. She then played 35 mins in the first half because she was used to junior football and let slip that she'd failed her FA exams on the off-side rule but had been allowed to start reffing. Would it have happened if she was a bloke?

Surely you're not inviting us all to generalize from one case?

I've played with **** refs loads of times and they were all men. I therefore deduce that all men are **** refs.

One ref we use, stands in the center circle and refuses to move out of it.

Believe it or not he's one of the best.

I don't actually remember saying that, let me check.

No, I didn't say that. I was merely telling you about my experience of women refs. However, my point about her not playing and having trouble interpreting intent is more likely to apply to women than men. Don't think thats too much of a generalisation.

I've also had an American ref who didn't know the rules, a deaf and dumb ref (who is excellent) and one with only one eye (who was also excellent). Can you tell I don't play at a great standard?

                            But...

So you were inviting us to generalize, no? To extrapolate from from a single experience is too much of a generalization IMO.

A **** ref is a **** ref. Most of them are at the levels most of us play at. She was obviously hugely inexperienced.

There is actually a female ref in the local leagues round here and she's a lot better than most of the men so I;m told. Everyone knows they'll not get away with anything and she'll be consistent. I suppose she works harder at it cos if she was **** they'd just blame it on her being a woman.
