Europa League winners to qualify for Champions League from 2014

Up to a quarter of the Premier League could play Champions League football under new proposals expected to be approved by Uefa officials.

The congress of European football’s governing body, which is meeting in London this week, will announce that the Europa League winners will automatically qualify for the Champions League from 2014.

The move is aimed to boost interest in Europe’s second-tier tournament.

Uefa would in turn increase the maximum number of teams from one country allowed into the Champions League to five – in a bid to avoid a repeat of the scenario which saw Tottenham finish fourth in the Premier League last year but miss out on Champions League football when Chelsea won the competition.

Only in the event of the winners of both competitions hailing from the same country – viewed as unlikely – would the fourth-placed side miss out on a Champions League place.

Meanwhile, at a separate meeting today, Uefa’s executive committee ratified a proposal to impose a ten-match European ban for players and officials found guilty of racism.

However, moves to oblige national associations to follow suit have been watered down.

Bloody hell, you've got to admire Man United's forward planning and lobbying power. This change is obviously just to give them a back-up route to the CL when Moyes drags them down to fifth.
      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
