What was the reported price again? ~£10m wasn't it?
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

            EXCLUSIVE

Liverpool have emerged as Manchester United's biggest rivals for Will Hughes after Brendan Rodgers installed the teenage prospect as his top target for the January transfer window.

Already linked with Hughes, along with several other Barclays Premier League clubs, Liverpool are now ready to grasp the initiative, with Rodgers poised to ask for the necessary funding to land Derby's England Under 21 midfielder when the market opens again.

Derby manager Steve McClaren effectively sounded the starting gun for a scramble to sign Hughes in the New Year by admitting the Championship club could not hope to hold on to him much longer.

Top target: Liverpool and Manchester United want Derby's Will Hughes (centre) in the January window
Derby may demand as much as £15million for the 18-year old, and while Liverpool will try and negotiate that down towards single figures, Rodgers will urge his board to pull out all the stops to bring him to Anfield.

Rodgers was interested in the left-sided attacker before the last window shut and is now ready to spring into action, after McClaren reluctantly concluded that cashing in on one of the country's brightest talents was the only way to finance his own transfer plans.

Lined up: Anfield manager Brendan Rodgers (left) hopes to have Hughes on Merseyside this season
Though United have carefully monitored Hughes' progress this season, there are some misgivings within Old Trafford about the likely asking price and whether his slight build might count against him.

The fee could also be an issue for Liverpool, but Rodgers is said to be 'desperately keen' to see off his Premier League rivals and land an emerging talent he feels would be perfectly suited to his style of play.

Moyes may as well forget about it if we go in for Will Hughes. This kid is a huge Liverpool fan...not in the mould of Walcott, O'Shea etc.

£15m for an 18 year old who's never played top flight football? And they wonder why there's so many foreigners in the Premier League!

Exactly. We jump the gun and overrate players far too quickly. Yes, he may turn out to be a special player, but he has it all to prove yet and £15m is a massive gamble.

£5m upfront with clauses triggered by games played, goals scored, trophies won, international appearances etc., would ensure Derby get a good fee if he fulfills his potential. If not, we've not shelled out a fortune & it'll be easier to move him on.

Wouldn't be a bad signing if we didn't have such good youth coming through. Suso, Texiera and specially Rossiter. Too much money for yet another one. Maybe wait one more year and hope he turns down manure.

Gerrard will be older (less used) by then so the opportunities will start presenting themselves to justify such a cost.

He won't go for £15m. Any deal would be heavily incentivised anyway. Derby need the cash too.

i like this kid but im not sure i see the point.

we need a more defensive type midfield player and hughes as good as he is isnt that. also the best thing for a young prospect is to be playing regularly and thats not something he will get once he joins us.

if we sign him the best thing he can do is to stay with derby for another season or perhaps even more - for his own development.

let him get regular game time at derby, we might then get him for about 8m.
yes, we do need a DM as a priority, and no doubt that will be addressed, but when the chance to get a future top class player turns up we would be stupid to step over it while still searching for that midfield beef.

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

The price is exorbitant but I don't think Hughes is that much of a gamble. It will not be 15 million upfront. It will be 15 million conditional on appearances and other factors.

Even if he does not live up to his potential, he is going to be a decent premiership midfielder. The fact that English players are overpriced is going to work in our favor when we want to sell him. We will easily get back 6-10 million for him from clubs like West Ham.

Why would someone on redcafe know he'd been shown round Melwood when I've not seen it mentioned on any of our forums?

                                Seems a little strange
