Not the level of player we need at the price he's a available at.

I've no doubt some club will pay the £9m or so, he'll have a cracking season and we'll be paying £25m next season..... but that's the way it goes.

He's run out of steam over the last few weeks of the season and his level dropped, hence him being benched sometimes. That is a tough, physical league though and to have played the amount of football Hughes has over the last 9 months while still a teenager hardly makes it surprising that he's tired now.

Overall he's had a really good season; he's not ready to be a regular starter at our level yet, but if he was playing in Germany or Spain I'd expect to see people advocating huge fees for him right now anyway.

I'd still buy him now and loan him back to Derby for next season, still think he's destined for the very top.

All joking aside McLaren is a good coach so if we did sign Hughes and loaned him back it would probably be a good idea to offer a couple of others e.g. Ilori and Ibe. Having a small group of young players on loan at the same club could be more beneficial than sending them to different clubs.
