I consider Downing worse, as though Carroll was fairly ****, he was still an unknown quantity signed in a situation where we were distracted by bad decisions, traitors wanting out, FSG just in the door etc etc
Should have known better of course, but **** happens.

On the other hand, Downing was stinking up English football for over 6 years with his averageness apparent to all with eyes in their head, doing nothing of any note, conning England caps due to the fact he had a left foot. Christy Brown had a left foot, and he could have done a better job.
Horrendous signing.

On the other hand, if downing had performed averagely it wouldn't have been so bad, way overpriced but at least some use. He came to us and was mostly diabolical, even by his previous standard.

With Carroll we paid the cost of a world class player for someone with virtually no track record at a decent level. I think that makes it worse.
