Preston fan apologises for lying about having terminal cancer
A Preston North End supporter whose heart-rending story of having terminal cancer served to inspire the club to promotion has revealed she lied about having the illness.
Linda Moon, 34, was visited by Preston's players in hospital and given gifts such as signed shirts and club memorabilia after she told the club she was dying from blood and bowel cancer.
The club's fans held a minute's applause during the recent League One play-off final victory over Swindon Town as a gesture of support, and the club even took the trophy to her home after the game. Former England striker Kevin Davies also gave her his shirt.
An ITV television crew went to her house to speak to her about her inspirational story. She told them: "After my last operation in February they said the operation didn't work. Everything had spread too far. The doctors told me how long I've got but it was something I only wanted my family to know."
But Moon has now admitted that she lied about having cancer - instead, she suffers from Vascular Ehlers disease, a condition which affects her blood and skin.
Speaking to Rock FM, Linda said: "When my condition came out, it came out as cancer, and it all just spiralled out of control.
"I have Vascular Ehlers disease which affects your blood and collagen which is what makes my stomach swell and haemorrahage.
"I should have corrected people but it had gone too far and I couldn't get myself out of it. I thought I should set the record straight but I never did it - I feel horrible for what I have done.
"All I can do is sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart - it's not a nice thing to do to people.
"I have seen things that people have said about me, but I understand why they are saying it. I have hurt and upset a lot of people.
"I would just like to say I am truly sorry for not saying it is not terminal cancer."
Moon said she will be returning the gifts given to her and will apologise to Preston North End, who have not commented on the matter.
A petition set up by angry Preston fans demanding she is banned from Deepdale for life has attracted 250 signatures.
Davies, however, was quick to express his outrage on Twitter:
