What's the deal with world cup squad. I heard on radio that England need to name a 35 man squad for FIFA but are going to announce the final 23 man squad on Wednesday.

Am I right in thinking that they will just name 23 and just those guys will meet up or is the entire 35 meeting up with 12 of them knowing they aren't going. It seems an odd thing to do particularly if someone gets injured. Usually the squad is announced they play some friendlies then cut the squad back based on that. Why the change?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

do they not always name the 23, and have the 12 on standby? So they'll train in case of an injury. I seem to remember that being the case 4 years when a few of us bet on Lallana, Henderson, Sterling, AOC making the squad

I thought they usually name about 28-30 play the friendlies and then cut the squad back close to the tournament. Hence the headlines of people missing out like Gazza 98 he made the 30 man squad but was cut for the final 23. As long as I can remember that has been the way it was done. This seems a strange system particularly if the players on standby don't train with the main squad and then get called back from their holiday
