Yeah, he only knows carrot and stick management.

He needs to consider where Rangers have been before taking this approach, particularly so early in the season.

His management style smacks a bit off arrogance in that, he knows as a player he would be better, and whilst that may be true, using it as a stick to beat the players with will only get them so far. He seems to accept no management or tactical culpability himself.

He needs to look at succesful management techniques in football just now (Klopp, Pep, Poch etc) and how these guys improve players encourage morale and use the press for positive reinforcement.

Only one 'top' manager uses the press to lambast his team, and accept no repsonsibility.

      I'd agree so far.

Agreed. His management style so far reminds me of Souness.

I've never really understood the notion of Gerrard being Liverpool manager, simply because we don't know what the circumstances might be . Yeah, it's footballing romanticism, but we simply don't know what state we'll be in, or even how well he'll do during his managerial career.

I couldn't agree more, but it feels almost an inevitability, unless he goes completely John Barnes.

I can't see it with FSG in charge. Maybe if there was a takeover and the new owners did it as a PR stunt to try and win over fans, but I don't think FSG are that gullible.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I seem to remember a load of stuff about him comparing Rafa and Ged, not responding well to the distant approach, preferring the arm around the shoulder approach etc? Rafa would never have publicly belittled players for the sort of minor things Gerrard has lately. Bizarre and doesn't bode well. Hopefully he'll learn from it.

I don't quite share fears that he is nailed on to manage us barring abject failure as a manager. I think we're in an era where both boards and fans are much more prepared to look outside of the traditional pool of candidates, so if he's not up to scratch there will be plenty of others we consider approaching. See Arsenal and Henry, United and Giggs. All could get a chance, but I think they'll have to prove themselves a fair bit more than ex-players used to unless dire situations arise at their ex-clubs and they become
                    reasonable 'rescue' options.

Hope you're right. I think Giggs came perilously close (for them) to getting the gig. Didn't a load of important people at the club - Charlton etc - want him in at least temporary charge?

I don't think it's inevitable, but unless he's a complete disaster then I reckon his name will swirl around every time there's a vacancy, and there'll always be those close to or even inside the club who'll fancy him.

Possibly, I guess it's really difficult to know how close some of these actually ever were to being appointed. It's obviously useful for clubs to demonstrate some serious consideration of certain people to appease the dim and the dinosaurs - both on their board and within the fanbase - even if they know they will not offer them the position.

I agree on temporary appointments, mind. I think there's more possibility of that happening as the criteria for appointments in those situations can shift quite a bit, so I think unless Gerrard turns out to be a pretty good manager it will be his single most realistic way in.

Crisis -> temporary appointment -> remain popular, don't **** anything up -> get a short contract on a full appointment.

Pitch at Boca is horrendous, totally waterlogged and rain going to continue apparently. Pitch inspection later. Should be off going by the pics but who knows, may be under pressure to play it with the world watching.

Not appointed by FSG. Sacked by them though.
