Why is it that an attacking player can be within a metre of the ball and deemed 'not interfering with play' yet a defender can be 30m away and is included when considering the defending team?

It's a bollocks rule isn't it? Having players deemed 'not interfering with play' has done nothing to improve the game imo, it just makes the implimentation of technology almost impossible and linesman's job extremely difficult.

It is a bollocks rule..................get back to the way it was ! If you're offside, you're ****ing offside.......doesn't matter if you're head is hanging off on the other side of the play etc etc

It always annoys me when forwards in offside positions are deemed not interfering because the ball didn't go them etc etc.......the very fact they are in those positions is because the defence is aware of them., and adapted their play at the particular moment.

Back to the way it was please.....it was changed to encourage more attacking play, which you could argue it has done if only due to the amount of goals being scored, but I doubt it's a simple as that. One thing for certain, it's certainly increased the amount of poxy decisions, not too mention the increased guesswork needed by officials.

There should be no offside, but goalkeepers should be allowed to physically assault centre forwards and left backs wingers.

Its stupid, it brings in too much of a grey area for the Ref. A simple on/off rule would be better.

Who is to say the player not interfering isnt in the eyeline of the keeper so it makes him hesitate or something.

It was the Dawson goal that got me thinking about it again. Adebayour is offside in the old way and the ball goes within an inch of his head, how is the keeper not preparing for that!?

As it was, Dawson was onside yet the lineman said after that it was him that he was flagging for. I think he was mistaking Dawson for Adebayour but obviously wouldn't admit it after as he'd get sack.

If the attacker is being marked by a defender, surely that should count as "interfering with play". If the attacker wasn't there, the defender would be free to close down the ball / mark another attacker etc. Simply by being there, the attacker is affecting what the defender is choosing to do.

Prefer the old on / off way myself.

Premier League strikers braced as new offside rules are passed.. just in time for new season

The latest tweak to the offside rule could mean more goals being disallowed as a new rule-change was passed just in time for the new Premier League season.

If a player shoots towards goal and a teammate, in an offside position, makes a play for the ball - even if they don't touch it - they will find their effort being chalked off under the new rules.

A decision which means players can be penalised merely for the intention of touching the ball, rather than actually making contact, it is likely to see more efforts being ruled out ahead of the new football season.

The guidelines, which will also be implemented in the Football League, state: "A player in an offside position shall be penalised if he: Makes an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball."



Had the rule-change been passed last summer, for example, Juan Mata's winning goal against Stoke City in the 2-1 victory in December would have been disallowed. Marcos Rojo (pictured, above) made an attempt to head the ball past then-Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic - 'an obvious action' to play the ball.

Officials are confident the new rule will be a success and aid efforts to prevent players from hanging in offside positions where they would previously have been considered inactive, yet still able to influence the play.

It remains to be seen how referees will execute the new guidelines. The rules make it clear that players who make a conscious effort to remove themselves from the passage of play, stepping away from the action for example, will not be adjudged offside.
