West Ham have agreed terms with Argentine striker Mauro Zarate, Sky sources understand.
Sky Sports revealed earlier this week that the Hammers were in talks with the 27-year-old former Birmingham front-man.
Now West Ham have won the race for his signature, with the player expected in England in the next 48 hours.
Sky Sports understand that Zarate has agreed a three-year deal to move to Upton Park.
Zarate returned to Velez Sarsfield from Lazio last year and has just finished the Argentine season as top-scorer.
A source told Sky Sports: "Mauro is very excited about a move to England, he enjoyed his spell last time with Birmingham and is ready to play in the Premier League again."

The Vélez Sarsfield striker Mauro Zárate says he has agreed a three-year deal with West Ham as he closes in on a return to the Premier League.
Zárate, who was the top scorer in the Argentinian league last season, spent the second half of the 2007-08 Premier League campaign on loan at Birmingham from the Qatari side Al Sadd. He then moved to the Italian side Lazio and also played in Serie A for Inter.
The 27-year-old Zárate told Sky Sports News on Monday that he has been approached by West Ham and said that “it’s a new chance for me.”
The West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has been told to make his team more entertaining next season after securing a third straight year in the Premier League.
That rug really tied the room together.

I used to really enjoy watching him play for Birmingham. He was a real live-wire. Reminded me a lot of Tevez.
He could be a good signing, but only if he's up for it. He'll have to put up with chasing down flick ons and long balls over the top though, which I'm not sure he'll be exactly thrilled about.

Chelsea agree free transfer for Atletico Madrid's Tiago as Jose Mourinho eyes reunion with Portuguese midfielder
- Tiago is out of contract and will leave the Spanish champions
- Mourinho thinks midfielder can help Diego Costa can settle on
- Diego Simeone believes 19-year-old Saul Niguez can take Tiago's place
- Tiago worked under Mourinho during his first spell at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea have agreed a surprise deal to bring back Portuguese midfielder Tiago.
The 33-year-old has starred for Atletico Madrid in this past season, culminating in the Spanish league title and defeat in the Champions League final to Real Madrid, yet he is out of contract.
Jose Mourinho has already lined up a £38m deal with his club mate Diego Costa but Tiago's pending signature will no doubt help Costa settle in to life at Chelsea.
Atletico are poised to promote Saul Niguez to Tiago's position, a 19-year-old who has been on loan at Rayo Vallecano and who was wanted by Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Mourinho is looking to add at least three more players to his side with another striker and two defenders key.
They have made enquiries for left-back Filipe Luis at Atletico, made a late check on Luke Shaw's pending transfer to Manchester United and asked about Sevilla's Alberto Moreno who is wanted by Liverpool. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I'd be pretty uninspired by the Tiago signing.
