Aston Villa fans must be buzzing with excitement.
They have looked pretty decent so far this year. They are hardly going to win the league but I think Senderos and Cissokho look to be helping form a solid defensive unit which is a bit of a surprise.

Yes I defy anyone to honestly say that if asked to name two players to help solidify a defence says they would have said senderos or cissokho

That's a bit of a **** read to be honest Bendy. It reckons that Moreno falls in to the grossly overpaid catagory. £12m wasn't it, half the price United paid for Fatty Shaw

Shows you how far off competing we are when all our rivals top lists like these.

I think you have to look at Atletico and Dortmund to see that it is possible, even now to, to compete on the pitch but it takes excellent coaching/management and careful recruitment. I suppose to some degree the question is whether there is a peculiarity in the PL in that there are 3 teams who have regularly challenged and had resources to invest as opposed to 1 or 2 in the other leagues.

There is, without a doubt. The money in English football is a blessing in disguise. It's done nothing to develop the game in England. The expense level in transfers and wage have sored but nothing substantial have been gained. It's become a money league that struggles internationally now. There is little development going on because the teams seem to be able to bye their way out of trouble, that goes with the top teams as well as the mid-table teams now.

I heard a debate on the radio, where 2 head scouts and youth development persons were on and they talked about specifically Danish talent going abroad. They said that one of the last places they advised youngsters to go were England, because the youth system is years behind Germany, Spain, France, Holland and others. Little is afforded towards long term youth investments, clubs have to little patience in developing a stratagy that gives benefit down the line and it's constantly shaken up everywhere. Coupled with little continuity in the club, it's all manager specific and youngsters have a hard time gaining first team experience and it's likely a development stopper for most youngsters with potential.

One of them said that if his kid were at a top club in England, he would try and get them abroad to develop even.

It seems all too plausible. However, the flip side of that is that there is a niche we could exploit. We probably should have put things in place when either Hodgson or Dalglish left - i.e. appointed a DoF or equivalent to ensure we had a long term strategy.

I appear to keep coming back to them but I do think you have to look at what Southampton have done in terms of punching above their weight in a sustainable way. They appear the only PL club with a long term strategy which involves youth development. Part of that appears to be to have a system that works like a DoF but is less high profile.

I agree, I find it very odd that FSG didn't take the step when they took over the club. They seemed to come with a new perspective, but they perhaps adapted to our culture to quickly? I think there is a lot of potential to exploit it as you say - but we seem to change our setup as often as everyone else!

A DoF or similar would be ideal, or at least some management decision on what our playing philosophy will be in 10 years time, and then starting to develop youngsters for it and getting the relevant thinking staff at all lavels. This is what made many Dutch teams so succesfull and Dutch football so good at developing youngsters. The same underwent German football during their huge financial crisis, and French football have been at it since the 90's.

Lately Belgium is another very good example of long term thinking.

Those figures can't be true can they..

£70m for Suarez would mean over a 5 year contract he's earning just shy of £500,000 a week or is my Math gone to pot.

                                Edit:

And using the same logic it puts Di Maria at.

                                £190.4 total cost.
                                £59.6 transfer

                                =£503,000 p/w
                                Vive la France
