The African teams peaked 10-15 years ago. All are much worse than before.

June 16 (Reuters) - Portugal have denied midfielder Raul Meireles was making an insulting gesture toward the referee after team mate Pepe was sent off against Germany on Monday, saying he was simply passing on tactical instructions from coach Paulo Bento.
Photographs posted on Twitter showed Meireles gesturing with his fingers behind Serbian referee Milorad Mazic's back during the first half of Germany's 4-0 Group G win.
"The Portuguese football federation (FPF) reiterates that there was no gesture directed to the match referee and regrets the speculation which would seriously damage the interests of the player and the national team," they said a statement.
"The FPF clarifies that the gesture, which has been misinterpreted, was directed at team mate Bruno Alves and merely indicated instructions from coach Paulo Bento.
"Raul Meireles was just explaining that he would drop back to the position of central defender, playing on the right of the defence.".
The incident occurred after Portugal defender Pepe was shown the red card in the first half of Monday's game.
Pepe leaned into Germany striker Thomas Mueller with his head, making contact and applying pressure in a needless altercation that could bring him a stiff punishment. (Editing by Peter Rutherford)
Look at his fingers, they're obviously his index and not middle fingers.

That was the best match I've ever seen him play... funny your should say that, I was just talking about him as my MOTM and I can't find anyone here who agrees. ??

He is usually less positionally sound, but he played great tonight. Unfortunately, Bradley, who is usually our best player, was atrocious and Jones had a rough game, so Beckerman stood out because he had so much mopping up to do. I think that played to his advantage because he did not have time to take a mental break, which usually leads to a mistake. Still, by far MOTM.

And yes, he is an MLS lifer. He is perpetually the best player at his position in MLS, but that is not saying much. He has not been starting often for the USA, but Klinsmann put him in against Nigeria in the tune up game and the "shape" was much better from the team. Saw that tonight, but our team has no touch or vision on the ball. It is the curse of being a USA fan having to watch them struggle with technique.

African teams have looked so poor. Typically actually, very athletic and lots of energy but also naive, scatty & lacking any sort of composure.

Thought the USA & Iran were solid and very well organised. Iran were really playing negatively but the US were decent when they countered & will not be an easy game for anyone.

Ronaldo is intolerable. The most self-obsessed player of all time. I remember laughing out loud at him in the CL final when Bale scored (and for one of the other goals) - all the team run off to celebrate except Ronaldo who cut a lonely and isolated figure as he trudged back for the restart. What a complete and utter cunt. Then of course dives to win a penalty so he can get "his goal" and goes absolutely bat**** mental when he scores his meaningless penalty.

Yesterday he had the most shots of any player in one match in the WC so far - 7. Most of them were ridiculous, of course. You have to laugh when they get a free kick....other players getting in situ to have a pop and then Ronaldo, even though he's already had a boatload of ****e attempts, strolls up and everyone scatters without a word being said.

Portugal players even eschew better opportunities for themselves/others if Ronaldo is in sight and they give him the ball at all costs. It's incredible.

You know he's seething this morning. Not that his country got smashed but that he's a goal behind Messi. He's an utter bellend.
