How good was Van Basten though , poor bloke getting them injuries and retiring early.

If he was around today would of been worth a fortune and surgery would have saved his knees I reckon.

fantastic comparison that is. Was trying to think of who he reminded me of and as soon as you said Van Basten... I thought that is spot on.

The Van Basten comparison is a really good one. Whilst I don't think Lewandowski is at the level that Van Basten was at, he does have an awful lot in common with how the dutchman used to play.

Lewandowski's ability to drop deep, hold up play, and show beautiful close control in doing so echoes what Van Basten used to do, and whilst not quite as clinical a finisher as Van Basten he is pretty much in the world class bracket on that front.

Some of the finesse shown by Lewandowski is also similar to what Van Basten used to do.

Even their more physical qualities are similar although in terms of available brute force and the willingness to use it I would again have to go with Van Basten who was as strong as they came and was not shy in using that strength when needed.

Van Basten for me was as complete a front man as say Souness was as an example of a complete midfielder. Just the perfect player for the role.

He had everything. Pace, strength, size, aggression, vision, finesse, awesome close control and all round technique and maybe most important of all he excelled at bringing teammates into the game whilst still remaining his team's greatest threat.

Think he Van Basten was around nowadays, with modern day medical advances, nutrition, training etc., then he could well be sitting right alongside Messi, Ronaldo and Suarez in terms of being the most effective attacking player on the planet.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Much more interesting having a Marco Van Basten appreciation day than rehashing the Brendan out stuff.

He is one of the best of my lifetime, and maybe the best in his position. An absolute rolls royce of a player - who was mixing it in Italian football in the days of Baresi and lax refereeing. His Euro Champs final goal is one of the most memorable I can remember. He had the lot. Good with either foot and in the air.

I have some memory of him scoring the perfect hat-trick when he was with AC... Including an overhead kick.

Lewandowski realistically is not yet the player Marco was, but if he keeps going the way he is he could run him close.

Not quite the perfect hat-trick (no header) but he scored all 4 in a 4 nil win v Gothenberg.

The quality of footage makes this seems as though it is from the dark ages
