Footballer Clarke Carlisle charged with driving offence before collision
Former footballer Clarke Carlisle was charged with a drink-driving offence days before he was seriously injured when he was hit by a lorry, it has emerged.
The 35-year-old was struck by a lorry on the A64 near York on 22 December and remains in hospital in Leeds.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed he was charged with failing to provide a sample on 20 December.
He is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on 20 January.
Mr Carlisle, who played for teams including Burnley, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United and Northampton Town, was also the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association.
His wife Gemma wrote on Twitter on Monday that he was "still very poorly but we're hopeful he'll make a full recovery" and thanked well-
Surely facing jail time now - got a 20 month driving ban in 2011, charged with drink driving 3 days ago and had this accident 36hrs after, possibly drunk again.
The man's a self confessed alcoholic and whilst he needs help, he's trying his best to kill someone else along with himself. He needs locking up pronto.
if you want to feel sorry for an alcoholic then fine, but once they get behind the wheel of a car and possibly put the lives of others in danger then they get no sympathy from me. it could be my kids he kills.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

Wish him a speedy recovery but the man is a hypocritical cunt.
"Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley
I dont want to feel sorry for him. Especially for doing what he did. No proof that thats actually what happened either.
Too be honest he seems to have a fairly low stock with Liverpool fans over the Suarez thing, which is fair enough. But its no reason to dismiss his problems as 'Just another chip on his shoulder'
I know Bob has explained it, but it does come across as cold.
Is this one of the guy's who was on Suarez's case all the time?
Yeah, just mentioned that I think thats why a lot of Liverpool fans hold a low opinion off him.
TBH I think he was rather self interested in his role for the PFA, came across as protecting himself rather than fighting for his members, when it seemed like the unpopular thing to do.

They keep saying he was struck by a lorry and I'd wrongly presumed that meant he was a pedestrian
