Mark Hughes is battling to secure a club record £14million swoop for Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula after reviving the deal on Sunday.

Hughes will make a last-ditch attempt to sign the France under-21 international after Porto indicated they will lower their original asking price.

Stoke had withdrawn their offer on Friday after growing frustrated with the rising cost of the deal but talks have now resumed and Imbula could join Hughes's squad before the deadline.

Stoke have also considered a bid for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino but have not made an offer as they suspect he is not for sale in this window.

A proven 'No. 9' striker, who can score 15 goals in a season, is another priority for Hughes but that may now be shelved until the summer.

Hughes was planning to sign defensive cover after Marc Wilson suffered a knee injury at Crystal Palace on Saturday, but captain Ryan Shawcross is making a rapid recovery from a back problem.

Shawcross could even return against Everton this weekend, lessening the need for Stoke to make a short-term loan signing.

After going out of the Capital One Cup last week at the semi-final stage, Stoke were beaten by Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup and now just have 15 Premier League matches to concentrate on between now and the end of the season.

I wanted us to sign Imbula in the summer, he'd give our midfield some missing physicality. If he was available for £14m then he'd be worth a punt, one of those players whose career has stalled and represents a worthwhile risk.

I read Porto wanted in the region of £25m and not like them or Doyen to make a loss on a player.
