Croatian international Mateo Kovacic will join Liverpool for £22m in May, according to reports in Italy today.

The Austrian born attacking midfielder has also been attracting interest from Arsenal, but reports in Italy suggest cash-strapped Inter are desperate to sell and the Reds have agreed to meet their asking price.

Kovacic, who turns 21 in May and has already racked up 19 caps for Croatia, joined the Serie A club in a deal worth around £11m back in January 2013.

Anyone seen much of him for Inter this season? I know the article is calling him an attacking midfielder, but anytime I saw him play in the past he was in a box to box role or in a deep MF role.


His style of play and ability to play well in a number of positions reminds me a lot of Marco Verratti at PSG. He is bigger and more robust than Veratti but they have a very similar style of dribbling and both are really good passers of the ball. Both are very good at making the game go through them for their teams as well.

He's been one of their best players, that isn't saying much though to be fair given how **** Inter are these days.

For me Medel has been there most impressive midfielder whenever I've seen them.

Kovacic has drifted forward at times but like you say he is more 1 of a 2 man base in midfield but he can definitely operate in the 10 role and has at times.

For example he's created more chances this season than Coutinho has for us so I'm presuming he's had a more advanced role at times when I haven't been watching.

Liverpool will run the rule over Mateo Kovacic this weekend as they ramp up their interest in one of Europe's most exciting young talents.

The Reds will send scouts to watch the 20-year-old play for his country Croatia against Norway on Saturday, after compiling reports on his performances for Inter Milan in recent weeks.

And while Italian media suggestions that the English club has already agreed a £22million deal with Inter for the attacking midfielder are wide of the mark, Liverpool ARE keen on him, and are finalising their scouting reports before entering the race.

Would prefer Pjanic to Kovocic as he plays CM quite often, both would be great. A striker has to be a priority and a RB as well. We'll need £70/80m at least.

Isn't Kovacic wanted by Barcelona? Seems unlikely we can get him but would be an interesting signing. Like the idea of a Can, Kovacic, Henderson midfield 3 in the future.

But he's meant to be awesome

From a supporter's perspective I'd rather a step into the exciting unknown than buy someone we know is average.
