So, I took the kids to their first football match on Saturday. Hearts v St. Johnstone, and I was seriously impressed by Hearts.
Last game I went to was an absolute shocker of a nil nil, so my expectations were low, and though I was aware Hearts are 5 clear and unbeaten at the top of the league, I was assuming they were a flash in the pan.
Based on Saturday, I reckon they are genuine contenders, particularly given Celtics recent fall from grace.
It is the best football I have ever seen a hearts team play (i used to have a season ticket and it was grim). Passed the ball about nicely, and built some solid opportunities. Should have been out of sight but a late St. Johnstone goal made it a nervy last ten mins and a 2-1 win.
Also in attendance at the game, Steven Gerrard esq.
Hearts play Rangers at Ibrox next, in what could be a classic, and if they can escape from that with the unbeaten record intact the rest of the season is well set.Modifying post.Comment

Always great when a non-Glasgow team make a good start to a league campaign.
Last team I can remember doing it was coincidently Hearts under Burley and we all know how that ended.
That being said Rangers and Celtic are bang average this year so who knows. However it wouldnt surprise me if one or both stick a bid in for Stevie Naismith come January. It's the Old Firm way after all.

Aye the Burley team has been mentioned (it was after about 7 or 8 wins in a row he got canned).
The guy who looks great (and therefor who will definitely end up playing for Celtic) is the big centre mid Peter Haring, bossed the game.
It is a real gamble for SPL team relying on free transfers and a youth policy, but this just shows what can happen if you get it right,
Celtic and Rangers look mediocre, and it would be good to have a title race of some description. Im hoping Hearts are in the mix.
I might go to the semi if they play it at Murrayfield seeing as they seem to be kiboshing th madness of 2 semis on one day at Hampden.Modifying post.Comment

The problem for Hearts will be maintaining the momentum at the back end of the season when Celtic are able to rotate - that was where Aberdeen would fall away because they just didn't have the depth or resources Celtic did. Well - that and totally choking when the games actually meant something.
Season before last Aberdeen finished 9 off Celtic (or thereabouts) - if they hadn't kept choking against the Old Firm, it could have been so much closer.Comment

It is amazing that someone other than Celtic or Rangers haven't won the league in years. You'd think a tactically astute coach, some good players and some luck with form and injuries could do a Leicester every now and then.
Even if it were someone of the ilk of say a Neil Warnock or a Tony Pulis. A manager that has his players playing in a certain way that maximises their strengths and makes them hell to play against. With money being the massive factor, a team would have more chance, you'd think, of getting momentum by playing a more direct style. Perhaps that time has gone. 1985 was the last time a team other than Celtic or Rangers won it. Hearts lost it on goal difference in 86 on the final day and Aberdeen only had to get beat by one goal to win it in 91. Since then, nobody has come close.Comment

Bittersweet day for me when Hearts lost it. Simultaneously Kenny scored at Stamford Bridge to win LFC the League as Albert Kidd was making a name for himself at Dens Park.Modifying post.Comment

Stevies biggest issue so far imho is that the League is there for the taking, yet he seems to be getting all his results in the Europa which they have no chance of winning.
Should be a cracker on Sunday at Ibrox and a big test of Hearts credentials, but with the 5 point lead I reckon a draw is decent for Hearts.Modifying post.Comment
