I've read about it and seen it demonstrated but I'm still not sure that I've got my head around how it works.

I suspect the issue with this one, given the apparent lack of height was exacerbated by full fuel tanks.

If a chopper goes into a spin then I can't see how a parachute would help as it would get tangled and be useless.

Nice idea but those rotors are going well too slowly for that to ever take off in the first place

They seemed to skip over the bit where the rotor smashed into the cable. It would also leave the helicopter without any control (less than with autorotation) drifting in the wind into God knows what. Interesting idea but does seem to have conceptual issues from a layman's perspective.

I see that rag is true to form by publishing a video of the crash.

Doesn't really show much apart from it spinning as it clears the stadium.

And I didn't see it on that site.

I have read some speculation that the police were using a drone to monitor crowds around the stadium as the helicopter was taking off and the drone hit the tail rotor causing the crash.

Got sent something similar myself today, If there’s any truth in that story I’m sure it will become public knowledge when they listen to the pilots transmission on the black box recorder.

On the video as the copter climbs vertically and just before it starts to spin you can see something either break apart from the tail rotor or something impacts with it.

Over an hour after the game finished, what crowds?

That was a rumour doing the rounds in the immediate aftermath - swiftly denied by the police and considered to be unhelpful bull****.

There was an interesting article on the beeb site yesterday about when you can crash land a helicopter with a chance of not dieing and when you really can't; all relates to the tail rotor apparently and the stability it brings (or not).
