What was the chat I semi-overheard during the game yesterday? Is there a new double jeopardy rule where if a penalty is awarded then there will not be a red card?

I'm not saying that's an example of it but it just reminded me.

There has been a change you're right but I'm not certain what it is either!

      Edit - you're right

The new plan is for referees to award the card that the challenge would merit were it to have taken place anywhere else on the field, so dangerous tackles will still be punished with a red. The example that AS gave was that of elbowing someone in the box, which will see a red card issued. There has been no clarification yet on whether or not a cynical foul outside the box would still result in a red, but we'll bring you more on that when we have it.

The rule change will also affect goalkeepers, who will no longer be sent off for bringing down a player as they lunge at his feet to collect the ball, so that may mean even less time on the pitch for backup 'keepers. Platini has asked that FIFA consider amending the rule themselves at the next meeting of their board in March, but UEFA have already implemented the changes.
Mind you the keeper did the lunging here!

I've just had a gander too.

A professional foul still warrants a red card, but they're trying to stop players being punished thrice (a red card, a suspension and a penalty kick). Going by the information you've found a De Gea lunge would be carded but he's still committed a professional foul by denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Smells to me that they're changing rules for ****s and giggles (see the new kick off rule).

Fancied an Italian master class today. So it's been so far. Chelsea will be a tough proposition with this guy in charge next season.

Agreed. They're extremely resolute and well-drilled. Their shape is solid but not to the detriment of their counter-attack. Spain have helped by not turning up and having zero pace up top but the Italians are just a boss tournament team.

'Gerrup' says Murphy. After Aduriz takes a nasty tumble.

Pique wipes an Italian out with no attempt to play the ball and the referee waves play on.

I reckon a pubic louse could pronounce players better than Jermaine Jenas.

The ultimate shame: a substitute getting substituted. (Ignoring his potential injury that Murphy felt he should just get up and walk off).

Not so much of a masterclass this second half. Still should have had the game dead and buried with the chances they've had.
