Going back to something that was mentioned earlier, regarding the way footballs have changed from big, leather lumps to the lightweight versions we see today, are there any more modern players who are known to have early signs of dementia, or is it too early to know? The announcements that I have seen seem to involve the players of the past generation, when heading must have been akin to getting punched in the head by a heavyweight?

Compelling stuff. It's frightening that there's no cure

I started this thread due to my best mates dad being diagnosed with Dementia. As mentioned he was an ex pro with Hearts in the 70’s.

                  Sadly he died this week

An absolute diamond of a human being.

                  It’s an incredibly cruel illness.

Thanks fellas. My old man is going to be a pall bearer at the funeral. It’s been a brutal ride for the family watching Dave fade away. In a more peaceful place now. We used to all holiday a couple of times a year when we were kids and I have so many fond memories.

Dementia is such a brutal illness.

                            R.I.P.

One of my neighbours was a former footballer in the late 50's to early 70's, played with Ian St John at Motherwell. He was part of a project trying to raise awareness for dementia in football. Another really nice bloke, he died in lockdown in 2020.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Players are still encouraged to head the ball - asking as an idiot ignorant here - is the issue the mass of the ball, or the rapidity of movement of the skull? In other words, is heading a light ball safe, or is the problem the action of 'rapidly shaking' the head?
                                Really?
