My problem with Souness' suggestion is that yes you might get more goals but as Carragher said you always have 2 lines so it doesn't make the interpretation using VAR any easier or quicker.

VAR still has the same problem but instead of looking to see if any part of the attacker is beyond the defender you are looking to see if any part of the defender is level with the attacker

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Yep, instead of a fraction ahead of the player you are looking at a fraction behind the player.
      Same same, really.

Yep, it would encourage more goals but leaves exactly the same issue, which Souness can’t seem to understand.

Said exactly that to my dad yesterday. Doesn't solve the problem just shifts the focus.

I have a very easy fix

Use the same technology that's used for the ball crossing the line. Put sensors into all the players boots (similarly to what's in the ball).

If a players foot (sensor) is in an offside position - then the player is offside. None of this any part of the body that call play the ball lark.

that way, technology can make a completely unbias decision - we know contact on the ball from the sensor in the ball and we can tell which foot is furthest up the pitch. Completely emotionless and optionless decision

A good but long twitter thread on this subject.

Norbs, this is not dissimilar to what I said yesterday in the match thread. Particularly this tweet:

Hmm. The goal line is fixed, if the sensor goes beyond the line by X amount then goal. The offside line is not.

The margin of error can be as much as a foot according to someone I was half listening to on the radio this afternoon.

On that basis I'm not sure how they can call offsides for toes etc.

You aren't comparing with a line though, you are comparing with the sensors in the boots of the other players.

If two sensors from the opposition are in front of you then you are onside. You take the frame that indicates the kickers foot is closest to the ball as the point of decision.

                    I think it could work.

Obviously Crouchie would have had a huge advantage if he was still playing with his huge feet.

VAR 'should not be too forensic' - football law-makers set to issue guidance

Suggestion here seems to be that these armpit offsides shouldn't be being given, and they are going to reissue guidance on them.

Whether this is or isn't what was initially intended it is how the system has been used all season and it seems wrong to change midway through the season. Also it's interesting that this has come out after 4 or 5 of these incidents occurred in a single round of games, they seem to be fairly reactive to criticism of VAR.

Cue lengthy and technical definitions of "daylight".

Anyway, FIFA don't set the rules. It has nothing to do with them.

FWIW......clear daylight (I assume between all parts of the body, considering the feet of the attacker will most likely be the closest as the attacker runs forward) is too much IMO.
Defenders drop deeper, tendency towards more fouls bringing about more red card inconsistency etc
Torso might be a better marker to work from, but if anyone thinks such an implementation will lessen the controversy and inconsistency of decisions, they are in for a surprise.

Ok, so you have sensors in boots but what are you using as a directional reference to determine 'in front'?

Crap idea. Without eyes from the side it will be equally difficult to determine. They're just looking as at it from the perspective of benefitting defenders or attackers and think that this will push the threshold back more in favour of attackers, but it ignores the fundamental problems of accuracy and deciding offsides to the mm.
