    Southgate & Special Dispensation

Exactly how recently was Southagate an international player then? :whatever:

    Southgate wins coaching reprieve

The Premier League have given Southgate extra time
Gareth Southgate has been given permission by the Premier League Board to remain Middlesbrough manager for the rest of the season.
He was given dispensation for his first three months in the job as he does not have the required coaching badges.

"The board treats each case on its individual merits and no one case sets a precedent," said a statement.

"Given the circumstances of his situation the board has consented to Middlesbrough's request."

The rules say a manager can remain as long as he has enrolled on the Pro Licence course.

But Southgate's sudden move from playing to coaching in the summer, when he replaced Steve McClaren mean he has not yet had a chance to study for the Uefa B and A badges, which he must have before he can apply for a Pro Licence.

He is in the process of acquiring his B badge, and will start studying for the A qualification in the new year with a view to taking the Pro Licence in the summer.

In its statement, the board said it had taken into account that he was until recently an international footballer, which had denied him the opportunity to take the necessary coaching courses.

GH? You mean GS? I hope he makes it as a coach too, he seems like a nice decent bloke, penalty miss aside.

My question was how recently was he actually involved at international level, this stopping him from getting his badges?

I quite like Southgate too but the PL board need to learn to make rules and then stick by them. Everyone who needs it seems to get special dispensation it is a joke.

I tend to agree with Trevor Brooking that the standard of coaching in this country (certainly in terms of domestic coaches) is poor compared to other countries. If we don't enforce minimum standards at the top then I don't think we can really hope to improve coaching at other levels.

Whats the point of the rules if managers keep on getting allowed to continue on?
