I meant to post this in here but put it in the General football thread by mistake:

What do people think of Southgate? On paper he looks to have a great record Euros final, WC semi final, better tournament record than any manager since 1966. But I feel he has been rather lucky with the draws in both tournaments they lost and went out to the decent sides they faced in the WC, same really applied here, alot has been made of the win against Germany, but that seems more like historic reasons than this German team being likely to win the tournament, so again Italy were the first good team they faced (maybe harsh on Denmark but they weren't touted as potential winners). I felt that Southgate was tactically found out last night. I felt after the first 20mins or so Italy were much the better side and far more likely winners, as they addressed the early tactical issues and Southgate had no answer for them, I also thought his handling of subs, extra time and penalty takers was poor.

They started 7 more defensive minded players and sat back after going 1-0 up on 2 mins....when player for player their squad is better than the Italians.

Mancini spotted the problem and sorted it, moved to a 3 man backline when attacking in the second half because that's how deep England were, no need for 4 at the back.

For some reason they still think they cannot expect to dominate a game against the Italys, Spains, Frances etc. but they have all the players and technical ability to do so.

Ditch one of Phillips or Rice, ideally the latter, build around Bellingham and they've again all the individual ability to win the world cup.
absolutely spot on imo. Fabulously talented squad being managed by a sub standard manager. Southgate seems a very nice guy but he's just not the level required to managed a host of talent and egos like that. Yes he made them very hard to beat but look at that squad ffs, a better manager gets way more out of that pool of talent. The potential really is there for them to win the world Cup if they get a top guy in.

Have to say Kane, Sterling and Grealish are an absolute disgrace for diving. I tried to watch BBC and had to turn it off. It went from "Clever" play to "maybe it was soft" to "everyone needs a bit of luck". When you dive more than the Italians something is seriously wrong.

Incredible talent and already running the Spanish midfield at 18.
Chiesa was class when he played, Pedri looks a serious talent, Olmo was very impressive too.

If Sterling was never going to take one why not take him off at the end of ET. I would have thought Henderson and Walker would have been options, in the warm up games Henderson was 'fighting' DCL to take a pen. To be honest I'm glad he didn't take one but given that surely he'd at least back himself.

Thats mental. Wonder if he forgot that Grealish was on? How ironic that Southgate had a pretty flawless tournament until it came to picking penalty takers.

Rashford's run up reminded me of Fred Flintstone tenpin bowling

Surely with all the coaching staff you have these days (and England's history with pens) you know who is on the pitch and available to take one

I would have thought you essentially have a ranked order of pen takers through the whole squad, obviously there are only 11 guys on the pitch but and someone might not be able to take it on the day but surely the purpose of those last min subs was to take off your lowest ranked pen takers and put some higher ranked ones on. The idea that you don't know who is on the pitch would be remarkable

You'd have thought that one of the coaches job is to work on the penalty list and basically give it to Southgate to rubberstamp. Looks really shambolic.

I was thinking last night if Henderson gave that pen to DCL and he scored, they'd both have been in the 5.

Might be being naive here, but wouldn't the team practice pens in training, manager sees who's up for it... then speaks to the squad about it... chooses the five key takers, get's them to practice taking their pens in order... then the whole things becomes a well-oiled machine and no-one gets worried, flustered, changes mind, etc on the walk up in the actual game...

If you want to be bloody good (clinical) at something, it's practice, practice, practice. Didn't Beckham used to spend hours after training taking free kicks...

Can't believe players 'aren't up for it' after a game. The only excuse would be a muscle injury. Mentally, if they prepared rigorously for it, there should be no issues.

                            Just me then?

I know you can't replicate the pressure but surely every England camp/training they should video them all taking pens. Profile who's better and where they prefer to put them. Then compare that to which keeper they are facing and a computer spits out the order.

Or get Steve Holland deciding in the last moment.

Stress does funny things to even athletes bodies. Look at Dida in the 2005 CL penalty shootout. You can see how he doesn’t move properly and he was a well seasoned world class keeper.
